Results of Visitor Expenditure Survey for the 2nd Quarter 2012
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total spending of visitors (excluding gaming expenses) amounted to MOP11.4 billion in the second quarter of 2012, up by 13% in comparison with MOP10.1 billion in the second quarter of 2011; spending of the overnight visitors totalled MOP9.3 billion and that of same-day visitors was MOP2.0 billion. In the second quarter of 2012, per-capita spending of visitors was MOP1,713, an increase of 16% compared with MOP1,482 from a year earlier. Analysed by place of residence, per-capita spending of visitors from Mainland China was MOP2,209, Singaporean visitors spent MOP1,426, Japanese visitors spent MOP1,372, Thai visitors spent MOP1,227. As regards per-capita spending of long-haul visitors, Australian visitors spent MOP1,434, US visitors spent MOP1,115 and UK visitors spent MOP948. Per-capita non-shopping spending of visitors rose by 12% year-on-year to MOP878, of which expenses on Accommodation and Food & Beverage accounted for 48% and 36% respectively. Australian visitors had the highest per-capita non-shopping spending of MOP1,274 and that of Japanese visitors was MOP1,219. Per-capita shopping spending of visitors amounted to MOP835, up by 20% year-on-year, with Local Food Products (23%), Jewellery & Watches (18%), Clothing (18%) etc. being the more popular shopping items. Mainland visitors had the highest per-capita shopping spending of MOP1,287. In addition, per-capita spending of overnight visitors increased by 16% year-on-year to MOP2,895, while that of same-day visitors edged down by 2% to MOP594. The overnight and same-day visitors from Mainland China had the highest per-capita spending of MOP3,741 and MOP760 respectively.

Extra show of “Peter Pan” to be added to the Macao International Music Festival

Tichket for the three scheduled performances of the 26th Macao International Music Festival opening show, the Broadway musical "Peter Pan", sold out shortly after tickets went on sale. In order not to let music fans down, the Cultural Affairs Institute has added an extra show at 3pm on 7th October (Sunday). Tickets will be on sale from this Sunday (19th August) at 10am, at counter sales, online and through the ticketing hotline.. Each person can purchase up to ten tickets at a time and audience are kindly reminded that the performance is only for 6-year-olds or above.

The main character, Peter Pan, is played by the Tony Award nominee Cathy Rigby. Her elaborated fairy-like aspiration and the professionalism of other Broadway actors will definitely turn the stage into Neverland. In addition to musicals, opera is also a beloved show of the music festival. This year, the festival presents Puccini's immortal classic "Tosca". In order to present to the audience the grand scenery of this masterpiece, the Cultural Affairs Institute especially invited the Puccini Music Festival production team from Italy to create a world-class set for the internationally renowned singers to perform on.

Government wants release of local man detained by Japan
The Government would keep close contact with the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Macao regarding the 14 Chinese citizen detained by Japan, including one local man. A statement issued today by the Government Spokesman Ofifice said China had asked Japan to "immediately and unconditionally" release the 14 Chinese nationals illegally detained by Japan yesterday on one of the Diaoyu Islands. Moreover, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had lodged solemn representations with Japan, it said. The Government was monitoring developments closely and would co-ordinate with the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Macao SAR to secure the release of Macao man to return home safely.

Consumers International official website features Consumer Council’s ‘Certified Shop’ Supermarket price survey work praised in CI’s newsletter
Consumers International (CI) recently features Macao Consumer Council's 'Certified Shop' mechanism on its official website and recognizes the consumer protection work that has been done in Macao. Further, the June's newsletter of Consumers International Asia Pacific & the Middle East regions points out that 'Macao (Consumer Council)'s supermarket price survey benefits consumers'. The CI recently features an article on the work of Macao Consumer Council, especially its 'Certified Shop' mechanism, on the CI's official website. The 'Certified Shop' mechanism is described by the CI as one which boosts tourism industry in Macao and helps promoting consumer right. The organization also recommends the mechanism to its global members. In order to enhance interaction and cooperation between its members, the CI features important projects of its members on its official website and exchanges information with its members. The CI recently features a detailed report on Macao Consumer Council's 'Certified Shop' mechanism on its website, enabling over 220 full members and affiliates from 115 countries and regions all over the world of the CI network to know more about the work and the said mechanism of the Council. The Council believes that such information will be disclosed to local residents by the member countries and regions of the CI network, tourists coming to Macao will therefore benefit from the 'Certified Shop' mechanism. Meanwhile, in its June's newsletter, the Consumers International Asia Pacific & the Middle East regions points out that 'Macao (Consumer Council)'s supermarket price survey benefits consumers'. Consumers International is an independent and non-profit international organization founded in 1960. The CI has been working closely with consumers organizations worldwide to help promoting consumer rights. Macao Consumer Council has become a full member of the CI since 1997 and gets access to the most updated information worldwide about new policies on consumer protection.

Government paying close attention to Diaoyu Islands detentions
The Government Spokesman Office today released a statement over the incident of activists detained by Japanese coastguard personnel when they landed yesterday on one of the Diaoyu Islands. The Macao SAR Government was paying close attention to the development of relevant issues, the statement said. It said the Government would fully support the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in asking Japan to refrain from taking any action that could endanger the lives and properties of Chinese citizens going to the Diaoyu Islands.

Astronauts complete three-day visit to Macao
Head of the delegation of the Tiangong-1/Shenzhou-9 manned space docking and rendezvous mission, Mr Niu Hongguang, today extended his gratitude to the people of Macao for their support for the nation's astronauts and space exploration project.
Mr Niu said this when the delegation met the press at Macau International Airport before they returned to Beijing after a three-day visit.
He said though their time in Macao was short, he noticed that there was a big change after Macao had returned to the motherland 13 years ago, and that he deeply felt Macao people's enthusiasm towards the nation's aerospace industry.
The nation's manned space project has been ongoing for 20 years and they would dedicate to develop and to build the manned space station in the next stage, said Mr Niu, who is also the Deputy Commander of China Manned Space Engineering.
The Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Mr Lau Si Io, the Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, Mr Xu Ze, the Deputy Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Mr Zhang Jinfeng, and some 300 students were there to see the delegation to depart.
On the last day of their visit, members of the delegation visited the Ruins of St.Paul, the Fortress Hill, the Macau Grand Prix Museum, the Macau Wine Museum, the Macao Science Centre and the Macau Tower.

Nation’s gold medalists to visit Macao
China's gold medal winners at the 2012 London Olympics' are to visit Macao from 26 August to 28 August, to share their pride and joy with the people of Macao. Coming at the invitation of the Macao Government, the gold medalists are scheduled to meet with the Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, on their arrival on the afternoon of 26 August. They will also attend a welcome banquet the same evening. More interactive activities between the Olympics' winners and the public will be held on 27 August. Students from universities, secondary and primary schools could personally ask the medalists questions at an experience-sharing session. In the evening, members of the public would meet them at a grand party to be held at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion. During the visit, the gold medalists will visit some famous World Heritage attractions in Macao before returning to Beijing. China won 38 gold medals at the Olympics, 27 silver medals and 23 bronze medals Information on tickets for the grand party will be announced by the Macao Sports Development Board shortly.

Private Sector Construction and Real Estate Transaction for the 2nd Quarter 2012
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 7,845 building units were purchased and sold at MOP31.05 billion in the second quarter of 2012 as per Stamp Duty record, up by 1.2 times and 1.7 times respectively quarter-to-quarter, with 5,555 being residential units amounting to MOP23.39 billion, up by 1.4 times and 1.8 times respectively. There were 11,437 building units purchased and sold at MOP42.76 billion in the first half year of 2012, down by 43.8% and 24.4% respectively year-on-year. Analysed by year of completion of the building, residential units completed in 2010 and after totalled 1,953 (including 1,424 pre-sale units), and 1,818 residential units were completed in 1990-1999. As regards floor area of the unit, 2,984 residential units (53.7% of total) had an area of 50 to 99.9 square metres. The average transaction price of all residential units amounted to MOP55,427 per square metre of usable area, up by 21.9% quarter-to-quarter. The average price of those in the Macao Peninsula (MOP47,461) and Taipa (MOP66,804) increased by 15.0% and 38.9% respectively quarter-to-quarter, while the average price of those in Coloane (MOP78,197) decreased by 6.0%. Analysed by floor area, the average price of residential units with an area of 50 to 99.9 square metres increased by 25.3% quarter-to-quarter to MOP55,774 per square metre; the average price of those having 100 to 149.9 square metres rose by 23.6% to MOP59,181 per square metre. In addition, the average price of office units increased by 18.3% quarter-to-quarter to MOP47,767 per square metre, and that of industrial units rose by 16.7% to MOP18,758 per square metre. In the second quarter of 2012, a total of 3,531 cases of real estate sale and purchase contracts were made, up by 77.4% quarter-to-quarter, and the number of units rose by 34.2% to 4,358. Moreover, there were 2,631 cases of residential mortgage contracts signed, an increase of 89.6% quarter-to-quarter. In the second quarter of 2012, gross floor area of buildings completed totalled 937,945 square metres, altogether providing 890 units (878 are residential units), 2,893 parking spaces for cars and 1,274 parking spaces for motorcycles. Gross floor area of buildings completed totalled 947,110 square metres in the first half year of 2012, providing 926 units (902 are residential units).

Foreign Exchange Reserves and Nominal Effective Exchange Rate Index for the Pataca July 2012
The Monetary Authority of Macao announced today that the preliminary estimate of Macao SAR's foreign exchange reserves amounted to MOP132.9 billion (USD16.64 billion) at the end of July 2012. The reserves fell by 1.2% or MOP1.6 billion from the revised value of MOP134.5 billion (USD16.84 billion) for the previous month. Macao SAR's foreign exchange reserves at end-July 2012 represented 19 times the currency in circulation or 158.0% of Pataca M2 at end-June 2012. In response to the significant changes of Macao's trade pattern in recent years, the Monetary Authority of Macao revised the trade weights of the effective exchange rate index for the pataca and re-set January 2010 as the new base period (Jan 2010=100). In July 2012, the revised index stood at 99.19, up by 0.48 points month-to-month and 4.56 points year-on-year.
