The University of Nevada Las Vegas Singapore Campus (UNLV) is pleased to announce the creation of the Macao Hospitality and Tourism Industry Practitioners Fund. Designed to encourage working professionals to continue their career development within the vibrant hospitality and tourism industry in Macao, this fund will provide additional scholarship awards to students who are accepted and enroll in UNLV's Master of Hospitality Administration (MHA) Executive Program in Macao for August 2011 and future intakes. Masters students can now earn their degree for MOP121,000 after this generous scholarship funding. UNLV's MHA program is offered in partnership with the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT) Macao. Both are committed to providing quality, comprehensive graduate education to industry professionals in Macao while continuing to nurture their relationship with the hospitality and tourism industry. Local industry is being provided the opportunity to endorse this new fund to show their support for members of the hospitality and tourism industry to further their professional development through higher education. A signing ceremony of industry endorsement of the Macao Hospitality and Tourism Industry Practitioners Fund will be held on 8 June 2011 at the Institute for Tourism Studies, Macao. The PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) 60th Anniversary and Conference opened this morning (April 11) in Beijing, with Vice Premier of the State Council Wang Qishan and Chairman of China National Tourism Administration Shao Qiwei addressing delegates at the opening ceremony. A delegation of Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) officials and travel trade members from Macau, led by Director of MGTO João Manuel Costa Antunes, will take part in the event, which will be held from April 9 to 12. This year the event marks both the 60th Anniversary of PATA and the return of the PATA Annual Conference and is expected to attract 1,000 PATA members and tourism professionals from across all sectors of the industry. Under the theme “Building Tourism: Past. Present. Progressive', the conference will address a variety of timely and popular issues ranging from space tourism to the more down-to-earth challenges of changing demographics, distribution, technology, aviation and responsible tourism that shape tomorrow's tourism. Following the Opening Ceremony, PATA Chairman Hiran Cooray, CNTA Vice Chairman Du Jiang and MGTO Director João Manuel Costa Antunes, among other guests, participated in the PATA Gold Awards Lunch and Award Presentation sponsored by MGTO. A total of 26 PATA Grand and Gold Awards were presented on the occasion to acknowledge the outstanding achievements of stakeholders in various tourism industry aspects. Speaking at the lunch, MGTO Director João Manuel Costa Antunes congratulated the winners who have shown excellence and dedication in each of their particular fields. “Macau is proud to contribute our part to global tourism development as an active PATA member as well as a long-time sponsor of the PATA Gold Awards. The Macau SAR government is also committing efforts in building Macau into a global center of tourism and leisure as supported and consolidated in the recently declared Twelfth Five-year Plan of Mainland China. The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) publishes the first release of information on the total spending (excluding gaming expenses) and per-capita spending of visitors; respective data on visitor spending were extrapolated according to about 176,300 effective questionnaires collected from departing visitors. Total spending of visitors reached MOP 37.9 billion in 2010 and per-capita spending of visitors amounted to MOP 1,518. Analyzed by place of residence, per-capita spending of visitors from Mainland China was MOP 2,039 and that of Japan at MOP 1,394; Southeast Asia at MOP 1,319; Oceania at MOP 1,254; Hong Kong at MOP 811; and Taiwan, China at MOP 677. Furthermore, per-capita spending of tourists (overnight visitors) and same-day visitors stood at MOP 2,529 and MOP 593 respectively, with Mainland visitors leading at MOP 3,367 in per-capita spending of tourists and MOP 828 in per-capita spending of same day visitors. Per-capita non-shopping spending of visitors amounted to MOP 745, with expenses on Accommodation and Food & Beverage accounted for the largest share of 45% and 37% respectively. Japanese visitors had the highest per-capita non-shopping spending of MOP 1,240 and that of overnight Japanese visitors reached MOP 1,910; besides, overnight visitors from Oceania and Europe had a per-capita non-shopping of MOP 1,022 and MOP 1,011 respectively. Per-capita shopping spending of visitors amounted to MOP 773, that was spent mainly on Local Food Products (24%), Jewellery and watches (21%) and Clothing (19%). Mainland visitors had the highest per-capita shopping spending of MOP 1,290 and per-capita shopping spending of overnight Mainland visitors reached MOP 1,937. In 2010, the average length of stay of visitors was 0.9 days; tourists and same-day visitors stayed at an average of 1.7 days and 0.2 day respectively. Visitors from Europe had the longest stay of 1.3 days and overnight European visitors stayed an average of 2.2 days. Total visitor arrivals reached 24,965,411 in 2010, up by 15% year-on-year, with visitor arrival in package tour increased by 24% to 5,745,222. The majority of visitors were from Mainland China (13,229,058); Hong Kong (7,466,139); Taiwan, China (1,292,734); Japan (413,507); Malaysia (338,058) and Republic of Korea (331,768); moreover, visitor arrivals from Americas and Europe totalled 297,137 and 244,463 respectively. At end-2010, there were 60 hotels and 31 guest-houses operating in the hotel sector, with number of available guest rooms increased by 4% year-on-year to 20,091. The average occupancy rate of the hotel sector stood at 79.8%, up by 8.4 percentage points from 2009, of which the average occupancy rate of hotels reached 80.5%. Total number of guests increased by 16% year-on-year to 7,755,214 and the average length of stay was 1.5 nights, up by 0.04 night from a year earlier.

Representatives of the Identification Services Bureau met with the “Association of Macao Permanent Resident Parents of Non-beneficial Children” again on 8 April 2011. In the meeting, representatives of the Identification Services Bureau reaffirmed that the Central Government employs the identical standard in solving the “Adult Children” issue in the Macao SAR and the Hong Kong SAR. Other implementation details are adjusted according to the practical situation in two regions. The Macao SAR and the Hong Kong SAR identically uses remaining quotas for “Adult Children” to apply to reside in Macao. As always, Mainland residents coming to Macao for residence must fulfill the regulations of relevant application in Mainland. Even the “Adult Children” of Macao residents in Mainland in the measure of solving “Adult Children” issue, which was initiated in December 2009, must also fulfill the regulations at that time, i.e. the underage children applying to reside in Macao must be below the age of 14 years old and their parent must possess a Macao identity card and Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Resident (so-called “Home Return Permit”). Nevertheless, the “Non-beneficial Children” indicated by the above-mentioned “Association of Parents” is different from “Adult Children”. Since these parents did not possess any Macao identity card and “Home Return Permit”, their children did not fulfill the regulations of relevant application in Mainland at the time. In pursuant to the stipulation of Article 22 of the Basic Law of the Macao SAR, Mainland residents entering Macao for residence is governed by the Central People's Government. There are strict regulations on Mainland residents entering Macao for residence in Mainland. Relatives of Macao residents in Mainland must make the application in Mainland. Only those who are qualified will be approved and unqualified persons will not be permitted to reside in Macao.
