
The Macao Orchestra’s concert ‘Mahler: The Infinite Titan’ will be held on Saturday, 7 June, at 8:00 p.m. at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium. Lio Kuokman, Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Macao Orchestra, will deliver a captivating performance in his dual role of conductor and pianist. In collaboration with the orchestra, he will present masterpieces by Ravel and Mahler, leading the audience into the musical worlds of these two great composers. Born in Macao, Lio Kuokman is one of the most prominent Chinese conductors on the international stage and was once hailed by The Philadelphia Inquirer as “a startling conducting talent.” In 2014, he swept three major awards at the prestigious Evgeny Svetlanov International Conducting Competition in Paris and was subsequently appointed Assistant Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, becoming the first Chinese conductor to hold that position in the orchestra’s history. He also made history as the first Chinese conductor to lead a subscription concert of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in its 121-year history—a testament to his remarkable musical achievements.
In this concert, Lio will lead from the piano Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major, a work infused with jazz and blues elements. Through its innovative rhythms, polyphonic techniques and dynamic percussion, the Concerto takes the audience on a thrilling journey from a vibrant opening to a dazzling finale. In the second half of the concert, the orchestra will perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major, “Titan”, in a majestic formation of nearly one hundred musicians on stage, portraying a poetic symbiosis between humanity and nature.
The Macao Orchestra’s 2024–25 Concert Season is co-organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Macao Orchestra Company,Limited, Galaxy Entertainment Group, Melco Resorts & Entertainment, MGM, Sands China Ltd., SJM Resorts, S.A., and Wynn Resorts (Macau), S.A., with the support of BOC Macau.
