The Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Government expresses its strong dissatisfaction with, and resolute opposition to, the content of the “Macao Special Administrative Region: Annual Report for 2025”, recently issued by the European Union (EU).
The report contains factual inaccuracies and biased comments regarding Macao’s political and social development, including unfounded allegations concerning the election of the eighth Legislative Assembly of the MSAR and the human rights situation in Macao.
Since Macao’s return to the motherland, with the firm support of the Central Government and the concerted efforts of all walks of life, the city’s economy has developed steadily, its society has remained prosperous and stable, its democratic political system has been continuously improved, and the well-being of its people has been fully safeguarded. These achievements have gained widespread recognition. The MSAR Government has continuously promoted democratic development and the rule of law, ensuring that Macao residents enjoy, in accordance with the law, extensive rights and freedoms, including freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly. Comprehensive progress has also been made in safeguarding human rights in the city.
The MSAR Government urges the EU to abide by the principles of international law and the basic norms governing international relations, and to stop publishing such self-styled reports year after year. The EU’s practice constitutes interference in China’s internal affairs and in the affairs of the MSAR. The MSAR Government hopes that the EU will adopt an objective and rational view of Macao’s tremendous achievements under the “One country, two systems” principle, and take concrete action conducive to the stable and healthy development of bilateral relations.
