Who needs a hero’s epic tale to fulfill their own dreams?
Is it the King who bids farewell to his concubine, or the concubine who bids farewell to her King?

Written by Nobel Prize laureate Mo Yan and produced by the Beijing People’s Art Theatre, the immersive drama Farewell My Concubine reimagines the historical Chu-Han Contention. Breaking away from conventional historical narratives, the play unfolds through multiple encounters and time-crossing dialogues between Yu Ji (Xiang Yu’s beloved concubine) and Lü Zhi (Liu Bang’s wife), exploring timeless themes of power, survival, and responsibility. Through a female perspective, it offers a profound reinterpretation of the legendary struggle.

An immersive stage design places the audience inside a fully enclosed “Chu military tent,” seated on woven mats and stools at varying heights to closely witness the characters’ intertwined love and conflict. Combining modern costume aesthetics and philosophical dialogue, the production reconstructs the historical epic through an innovative lens. Since its Beijing premiere in 2023, the play has earned wide acclaim. The premiere of this production in Macao, promises an unforgettable theatrical experience.
