The opening ceremony for the Training Programme for Chinese Senior Judges

To meet the country’s demand for cultivating foreign-related legal professionals, the University of Macau (UM) and the National Judges College jointly offer the Training Programme for Chinese Senior Judges. An opening ceremony was held for the 2025 cohort of doctoral and master’s students under the programme.

In his speech, Michael Hui, vice rector of UM, welcomed the five doctoral students and 19 master’s students joining the programme this year. He urged them to make use of UM’s academic resources and to identify connections between the courts and the rule of law, between the Chinese mainland and Macao, as well as between themselves and the wider world. He encouraged them to uphold the spirit of patriotism, develop a global perspective, stay informed about emerging legal issues, and conduct in-depth research in emerging fields such as digital rule of law, artificial intelligence governance, and cross-border financial regulation. He also encouraged them to align their academic pursuits with the needs of national development, thereby contributing their expertise to the modernisation of national governance and the judicial system.

In her address, Chen Chunmei, vice president of the National Judges College, thanked UM for supporting the programme. She expressed hope that, against the backdrop of the nation’s urgent need to accelerate the training of foreign-related legal professionals, the programme will produce more legal professionals who are well-versed in international rules and proficient in foreign-related legal practice, thereby contributing Chinese wisdom to the development of international and regional regulations. She also encouraged the students to cherish this learning opportunity, remain committed to their mission as guardians of justice, actively engage in global governance to serve national strategies, and become disseminators of judicial wisdom through mutual learning.

Since its inception in 2021, the Training Programme for Chinese Senior Judges has enrolled over 20 doctoral students and more than 60 master’s students. These students have published papers in various prestigious Chinese and English journals, achieving substantial academic achievements.
