On 12 March 1981, an explosion shook down the gunpowder mixing room of the Iec Long Firecracker Factory in Taipa, causing six deaths. Sounding like the death knell for Macao’s firecracker industry, it dictated the end of an economic lifeline that eventually disappeared. All that remains from those days is a heritage site and recollections.
The environmental play Impression of Iec Long will take the audience traveling to the past, back to the moment of the blast. Merging a diversity of performing elements, from drama and dance, to circus stilts and Quanzhou puppetry, this performance recreates an historical event through art.
As the largest and best-preserved heritage site of the firecracker industry in South China, it stands as a witness to Macao’s history, evoking nostalgic memories. Where are those industrious sweaty workers now? Could those who supported the traditional handicraft industry ever come to terms with their fate?
