The return of traditional opulence
It’s that time of the year again, when the Cultural Affairs Bureau welcomes the China National Peking Opera Company (CNPOC). Led by principal artists Yu Kuizhi and Li Shengsu, the troupe’s remarkable cast will perform two shows that delve into the expressive artistry of the Chinese lyrical tradition.
On the first evening, the company will feature three magnum opus A Meeting of Heroes, Invoking the East Wind, and The Huarong Pass, epic episodes drawn from the classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This masterful blend of singing and acting seamlessly balances civil and martial elements, brought to life by a vibrant parade of historical figures. Unfolding with dramatic intensity, their thrilling clash of wits promises an unforgettable theatrical experience rooted in centuries-old traditions.
The following show will delight patrons with The Legend of the White Snake, a beloved masterpiece penned by the celebrated playwright Tian Han and originally directed by the legendary opera director Li Zigui. Meticulously refined over the course of more than 60 years, the piece has established itself as a fundamental part of the operatic repertoire for countless generations of dan (female) role performers. Li Shengsu, an outstanding representative and advocate of the Mei Lanfang school, is also the mentor of the skilful Zhu Fengyi, with whom she shares the lead role of Bai Suzhen (Lady White Snake). In this production, they beautifully portray the character's steadfast, forbidden love for her mortal companion, transporting the audience into a mesmerizing dreamscape.
Established in 1955 through the dedication of Mei Lanfang, the CNPOC has garnered acclaim both nationally and internationally. Macao has frequently celebrated the troupe’s extensive repertoire, continuing a cherished operatic tradition, offering us an exhilarating series of classic works that honour an invaluable cultural heritage.
