Let us step into the illuminated courtyard of Zheng Guanying’s Family House, under the stars. Passing through gates and corridors, one seems to bump into Zheng himself – a pivotal figure in Macao’s cultural history.

In the late Qing dynasty, at a time of profound turmoil, Zheng withdrew to Macao and devoted himself to reflect on the future of the nation. His seminal work, Words of Warning in Times of Prosperity, was born from this period – a text that carried not only personal conviction, but also the anxieties and aspirations of a generation. More than a century later, these thoughts won’t fade.

The Night of Zheng Guanying transforms the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mandarin’s House into a living stage. Performers move through its courtyards and passageways, using their bodies as a medium, tracing the flowing of history. As patrons meander through the space, each step draws them closer – to that time, that place, that life.

Echoes of recited texts linger in the air, while moonlight drifts softly across the courtyard. The lamps remain lit, the writing unrestrained.
