UM scholar publishes new book on English education and policy

UM scholar has published a new book titled ‘English Literacy Instruction for Chinese Speakers’

Barry Lee Reynolds, an assistant professor of English education from the University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Education, recently published a new book titled ‘English Literacy Instruction for Chinese Speakers’, via Palgrave Macmillan. Co-edited with Teng Feng from Hong Kong Baptist University, this book is a valuable teaching material for Chinese learners who want to develop English literacy.

The book has 22 chapters and is the result of more than two years of collaborative editorial work. With an emphasis on instruction, policy, practice, and assessment, this book focuses on English literacy at the pre-primary/primary, secondary, and university levels, and discusses literacy policies in the region. An easy-to-read, solidly grounded book, it offers practical, thought-provoking resources for classroom teachers and educators. The book notably features explanations of key literacy skills, up-to-date research findings, and classroom applications that are contextualised for mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.

This book provides a core set of instructional techniques on how to incorporate literacy-related ideas into English language classrooms for pre-service and in-service teachers, English classroom practitioners, language teacher educators, literacy researchers, and students in research/teacher training programmes. A valuable pedagogical resource for teaching and learning English as a second or foreign language, this book also highlights discussions on language and literacy policies and provides examples of teachers who have put English literacy instruction into practice in the classroom.

Dr Reynolds has previously co-edited two books on Chinese and English literacy instruction, including Second Language Reading and Writing: Investigations into Chinese and English in 2013, and Research into Second Language Chinese and English Literacy Instruction in 2017. He is currently guest-editing two special issues of The Asian EFL Journal (Literacy Development for Primary and Secondary English Language Learners Across the Greater China Region)and Studies in Second Language Teaching and Learning (Teaching English Reading and Writing to Young Learners).
