The Macao Special Administrative Region Government and the Zhuhai Municipal People’s Government will stage their first joint fireworks show together above the sea area in front of Macau Tower and Zhuhai Hengqin Financial Island at 9 p.m. on 22 December in joyful celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region. 160,000 fireworks shells will be skyrocketed from four barges and 16 special-effect launching platforms in the 30-minute show. Unmanned boats and drones will also be harnessed for the first time in the fireworks show. A splendid extravaganza of fireworks will dazzle the night sky, symbolizing unity and celebration, bliss and prosperity.

The “Macao-Zhuhai Fireworks Show in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Macao’s Handover to the Motherland” is the first fireworks extravaganza jointly organized by the Macao SAR Government and the Mainland. The show is coordinated by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and the Administrative Committee of Hengqin New Area. The coordinators held a press conference today (2 December) to unveil details about the show. MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, MGTO Deputy Director Cheng Wai Tong and Ricky Hoi, Director of the Administrative Committee of Hengqin New Area, Yang Chuan, and Director of the Information Office of the Administrative Committee of Hengqin New Area, Hu Yanting, attended the press conference among others.

Innovative cross-territory collaboration paints 20th Anniversary with radiant colors

Senna Fernandes expressed that the Office makes a collaborative debut with Zhuhai this year, adopting innovative ideas of cross-territory collaboration to present the largest-ever splendid fireworks extravaganza blended with a diversity of new elements. She believes that the show will be an eye-opening spectacular for audiences and add a palette of vibrant colors to the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao SAR. Macao and Zhuhai have nurtured a close collaborative relationship with each other. The fireworks show is the fruit of their effort in exploring new possibilities for collaboration. It will effectively push forward coordinated tourism development between the two destinations and contribute to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into a world-class travel destination.

Yang Chuan remarked that the fireworks show, albeit being just a cultural event, represents deep collaboration of substantial significance. He hopes that this collaborative project will create a bridge for friendly exchange between the peoples of both places together celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao SAR. It also exemplifies an endeavor to make a mega event happen in concerted effort, to share competitive strengths between the two cities in tourism and cultural cooperation. Foreseeing that more opportunities for wider and deeper cooperation will come up in the future, he exhorted both sides to join hands in building a cultural bay area and orchestrating a new symphony of the epoch.

A feast for the senses tugs at the heartstrings

On the night of the show, fireworks launching locations will be set on both sides of Sai Van Bridge. Two barges and eight special-effect launching platforms will be stationed on each of the two locations. A total of 160,000 fireworks shells will be shot into the sky during the 30-minute show. For the first time, 56 unmanned boats and 600 drones will be harnessed to form a range of characters and numeral patterns including “Macao and Zhuhai united as one family” (in Chinese characters) and “20” as well as the images of the Ruins of St. Paul’s and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Merged with laser, light and music effects, the show will be an immense, innovative and mesmerizing feast for the senses.

To take fireworks enjoyment to an enhanced level of experience, the coordinators will install sound systems at nine locations and partner with TDM – Macau Chinese TV Channel (FM100.7) in streaming synchronized background music during the show.
