The Smart Energy Research Group of the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, University of Macau (UM), won an Award of Excellence and a Best Mentor award at the 2021 X-Game Shanghai New Energy Vehicle Big Data Competition.

A total of 550 teams formed by 754 students from 179 universities around the world, including Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Tongji University, participated in the online preliminaries. Ten teams from 13 universities entered the final. The UM team was comprised of PhD student Kong Lingming and master’s student Zhang Jinxi, as well as Assistant Professor Zhang Hongcai and Associate Professor Dai Ningyi, who acted as their mentors. Eventually, the UM team won an Award of Excellence for their project titled ‘Data-driven Research on the Development and Planning of Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Infrastructure’, which aims to realise service evaluation and planning of EV charging facilities in Shanghai based on multi-source urban big data. Prof Zhang and Prof Dai shared the Best Mentor Award.

This competition received guidance from the Shanghai Municipal Economic and Information Commission, Shanghai Committee of the Communist Youth League, and China Automobile Talent Research Association. It was sponsored by Shanghai International Automobile City, the Science and Technology Committee of Jiading District, Shanghai Youth Management Academy, and Shanghai Student Affairs Centre, and was hosted by Shanghai New Energy Vehicle Public Data Acquisition and Monitoring Research Centre and Shanghai Urban and Rural Construction and Transportation Development Research Institute.

Titled ‘Everything Connected by Data, The Future of Electric Vehicles’, the competition focused on some of the most important issues faced by the industry, such as early warning analysis of battery safety for new energy vehicles, energy-saving path planning, and public charging and changing facilities.

Vigorously developing clean energy vehicles represented by EVs is a national strategy and a consensus among major countries and regions in the world. The policy address for the fiscal year 2022, recently released by the Macao SAR government, clearly states that, ‘The government will continue to take the lead in promoting the use of EVs by formulating relevant plans. Moreover, charging capacity and infrastructure will be reserved for all parking spaces in new public car parks and new public buildings in the future.’ It is expected that EVs will enter a period of rapid growth in Macao. Against this backdrop, the Smart Energy Research Group will continue to carry out research on the planning and management of EV charging facilities, intelligent and orderly charging of EVs, and other related issues, in order to promote the healthy development of EVs and their charging infrastructure, as well as the creation of a green city in Macao. The related study was funded by the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao SAR (file numbers: 0137/2019/A3, 0003/2020/AKP, SKL-IOTSC(UM)-2021-2023).
