UM students and faculty visit Durham University
To broaden students’ global perspectives and strengthen ties between the University of Macau (UM) and top universities abroad, Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College (HFPJC) at UM organised a one-week exchange trip to Durham University in the UK. During the trip, UM students not only explored the history and cultural heritage of the UK, but also forged friendships with local students.
Led by Stanley Hui, college master of HFPJC, and Andrew Lao, resident fellow of HFPJC, a group of 14 UM students participated in the ‘When East Meets West’ international exchange programme hosted by Grey College at Durham University. The programme featured a variety of activities, such as workshops on baking scones, mural painting, and Tai Chi, which helped bridge language and cultural barriers. The students also attended a high-table dinner in traditional academic gowns, and joined local students at Grey Day, an outdoor music festival hosted by the college, to celebrate cultural integration. In addition, they visited the National Railway Museum and the Beamish Museum to learn about the country’s developments during the Industrial Revolution.
Sun Ka Ieng, a participating student, said that the trip changed her mindset. She was impressed by Durham students’ confidence and self-assurance, as well as their open-mindedness. She added that their ability to respond to unexpected situations with understanding and mutual support offered valuable insights into different ways of thinking and living.
This exchange trip represents a significant practice in UM’s strategy to strengthen international partnerships. By immersing themselves in college life at an overseas university, students enhanced their English communication skills, intercultural awareness, independence, and teamwork. Upon returning to Macao, they will organise sharing sessions to share their observations, reflections, and insights with the wider UM community. Looking ahead, UM will continue to promote global exchange initiatives to empower more students to excel on the international stage.
