The Cultural Affairs Bureau presents The Unknown I-land, an adaptation of The Tale of the Unknown Island by Nobel prize winner José Saramago. Produced by Dirks Theatre Arts Association, the play will run for three performances at the Macao Cultural Centre on 14 and 15 November (Saturday and Sunday).
Through paper objects, movement and live music, The Unknown I-land unfolds a wordless yet deeply evocative, poetic journey. It depicts the story of a lonely cleaning woman who spends her days sweeping up the passions and thoughts left behind by others—until a blank sheet of paper drifts silently into her room. Answering the paper’s call, she sets out on a journey of self-discovery. As performers take on multiple roles through physical expression and the manipulation of simple props, the play turns small ideas into new possibilities, boosting imagination.
Dirks Theatre has long been developing the stage arts through distinctive and innovative artistic approaches. Their previous works include the virtual play m@rc0 p0!0 endg@me 2.0 and The Old House of Orchard. For The Unknown I-land, the company continues their experimental practice within a physical, visual frame.
Selected by the Cultural Affairs Bureau for its ‘Commissioning Performing Arts Productions 2024-2026’, The Unknown I-land will be staged at Macao Cultural Centre’s Box II on 14 and 15 November, while tickets will be on sale from 19 September (Saturday) at Enjoy Macao Ticketing, subject to various discounts.
