Monetary and financial statistics – August 2026


According to statistics released today (6 October) by the Monetary Authority of Macao, broad money supply continued to grow in August 2026. Meanwhile, resident deposits* rose from a month ago whereas loans to residents* posted a decline.

Money supply

Currency in circulation dropped 0.2% whereas demand deposits grew 0.8%, M1 thus increased 0.5% from one month earlier. Meanwhile, quasi-monetary liabilities rose 0.9%. The sum of these two items, i.e. M2, grew 0.9% to MOP867.8 billion. The shares of Macao pataca (MOP), Hong Kong dollar (HKD), renminbi (RMB) and United States dollar (USD) in M2 were 32.1%, 43.3%, 8.5% and 14.7% respectively.

Deposits

Resident deposits* rose 0.9% from the preceding month to MOP845.3 billion while non-resident deposits* grew 1.6% to MOP377.4 billion. Meanwhile, public sector deposits with the banking sector increased 1.3% to MOP274.1 billion. As a result, total deposits in the banking sector grew 1.1% to MOP1,496.8 billion. The shares of MOP, HKD, RMB and USD in total deposits were 18.5%, 45.1%, 10.1% and 24.6% respectively.

Loans

Domestic loans to the private sector* fell 0.4% from a month ago to MOP472.2 billion. On the other hand, external loans* increased 1.1% to MOP565.8 billion. As a result, total loans of the banking sector rose 0.4% to MOP1,038.0 billion. The shares of MOP, HKD, RMB and USD in total loans were 22.3%, 40.1%, 16.8% and 16.8% respectively.

Operating ratios

At end-August 2026, the overall loan-to-deposit ratio decreased from 69.8% at end-July to 69.3%, while the ratio for the resident sector decreased from 42.8% to 42.2%. The one-month and three-month current assets to liabilities ratios stood at 59.8% and 48.7% respectively. Concurrently, the non-performing loan ratio stabilised at 4.4% from a month ago.

* Resident and non-resident deposits, as well as domestic loans to the private sector and external loans, cover both individuals and enterprises.
