Credit card statistics – 2nd quarter 2014


The Monetary Authority of Macao released today the credit card statistics for the second quarter of 2014. The total number of personal credit cards in circulation was 796,855 at the end of June 2014, equivalent to an increase of 3.8% over a quarter earlier. The numbers of Pataca (MOP) cards, Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) cards and Renminbi (RMB) cards were 566,883, 81,173 and 148,799 respectively. MOP cards, HKD cards and RMB cards witnessed respective growth of 4.3%, 1.1% and 3.4% quarter-to-quarter. Compared with a year ago, MOP cards and HKD cards rose 13.8% and 9.5% respectively, while RMB cards registered an upsurge of 22.7% mainly driven by a 22.7% growth of MOP/RMB dual-currency cards. As at end-June 2014, credit card credit limit granted by banks in Macao reached MOP15.7 billion, up 7.3% from end-March 2014. Credit card receivables amounted to MOP1.9 billion while the rollover amount totalled MOP546.9 million, accounting for 28.8% of credit card receivables. The delinquency ratio, i.e. the ratio of delinquent amount overdue for more than three months to credit card receivables, edged up to 0.87%. For the second quarter of 2014, the credit card turnover increased 1.5% quarter-to-quarter to MOP3.9 billion. The cash advance turnover was MOP201.7 million, accounting for 5.2% of total credit card turnover. Credit card repayments, in which payments for interest and fees are included, went down 9.2% from the previous quarter to MOP3.7 billion.
