Giant pandas “Jian Jian” and “Kang Kang” are about to undergo quarantine
After gaining the approval of the Central People’s Government and the relevant department of Macao Special Administrative Region Government, the giant pandas “Jian Jian” and “Kang Kang” are expected to embark on a journey of learning and growth in Chengdu in early November. The team of keepers have actively made a series of preparation efforts to arrange adaptability training for “Jian Jian” and “Kang Kang” and closely monitor their health and physical conditions, so as to ensure a smooth journey. To facilitate the relevant arrangements, “Jian Jian” and “Kang Kang” will undergo quarantine inspection from 9 October and will not be put on public display. The public are reminded to pay attention to the mentioned arrangement.
The 10-year-old “Jian Jian” and “Kang Kang” are the first set of giant panda twins born in Macao. After gaining the approval of the Central People’s Government and the relevant department of Macao Special Administrative Region Government, they will embark on a journey to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to begin the next stage of their growth journey as they enter adulthood. They will further learn environmental adaptation skills and experience a more enriched natural habitat to foster comprehensive physical and mental development.
To help “Jian Jian” and “Kang Kang” adapt to the conditions of land and air transportation, the team of keepers recently launched simulation training, which includes simulation of the motion and sounds during the transportation process, to gradually familiarise them with the relevant scenarios. Furthermore, a joint team consisting of experts from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and animal keeping and veterinary staff of IAM continue to follow up on their physical conditions, exchange information and carry out transition efforts in terms of their dietary preferences, character and traits, habits and routine training. These efforts aim to help the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding grasp the data collected from the keeping of the giant pandas and their actual needs as soon as possible and facilitate their smooth adaptation to the new environment.
To comply with the veterinary import and export regulations, the team of keepers and veterinary staff of IAM, jointly with the experts of Chengdu, will carry out quarantine inspections of “Jian Jian” and “Kang Kang” from 9 October. During the quarantine period, various health checks, including testing for contagious diseases, deworming, complete blood count test, etc., will be carried out to ensure the relevant inspection requirements are met.
