Representatives of multiple departments in the Working Group carrying out safety hazard inspection and preparing for removal of overhead cables in the area
To improve the urban environment of Macao and eliminate the public safety hazards caused by disorganised overhead cables, the City Beautification and Cleaning Working Group continues to promote the reorganisation of overhead cables. After the safety hazard inspection of the streets surrounding Rua da Sé coordinated by the Working Group and advocacy communication with the residents and businesses in the area, it is planned to carry out the removal of overhead cables in the area of Rua da Sé at the end of October.
The Working Group completed the removal of overhead cables in Pátio do Comandante Mata e Oliveira at the end of June, following which it has reviewed the experience gained from the pilot task and established an interdepartmental mechanism to carry out orderly safety hazard inspection of overhead cables in different districts of Macao, with the aim of enhancing overall urban appearance and public safety.
To ensure the removal will be carried out smoothly, the Working Group has earlier contacted the associations in the area to introduce the relevant plan, and delivered notices to the businesses and residents in the area together with the association representatives. The notices have been successfully delivered to 87 households and 45 street-level shops, whereas the notices for households and businesses that cannot be reached directly have been dropped off into their mailboxes. Meanwhile, notices have also been posted at building entrances to explain the potential public safety hazards posed by overhead cables and their adverse visual impacts, as well as the upcoming removal work. The removal of overhead cables this time is expected to take place at the end of October, joined by multiple departments under the coordination of the Working Group. The work will strictly adhere to the code of practice for electrical safety to guarantee the safety on-site and the safe use of electricity by nearby residents.
To minimise the impact on the residents and businesses, the Working Group has set up a dedicated enquiry hotline (Tel: 28337676) to provide technical consultation or for residents to put forward opinions whenever they come across unexpected situations during the removal. The Working Group hopes that, through interdepartmental collaboration, engagement of associations, and understanding and cooperation from businesses and residents, the removal of overhead cables in different areas across Macao can be advanced in order, so as to achieve the goal of enhancing public safety and beautifying the appearance of the city.
