Results of Wholesale and Retail Survey 2011


Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that a total of 12,737 Wholesale & Retail establishments, market stalls and fixed stalls on the street were operating in 2011, a decrease of 274 compared with 2010. At the end of 2011, total number of persons engaged increased by 1% year-on-year to 44,555. Total Receipts and Total Expenditure reached MOP68.77 billion and MOP61.52 billion, up by 30% and 29% respectively year-on-year. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy surged by 46% to MOP15.27 billion; Gross Fixed Capital Formation amounted to MOP829 million, up by 32% year-on-year. There were 10,962 Wholesale & Retail establishments operating in 2011, down by 188 year-on-year, of which 862 were engaging in Sales of Motor Vehicles & Automotive Fuel, 4,332 in Wholesale Trade and 5,768 in Retail Trade. Number of persons engaged totalled 41,573, up by 2% year-on-year. In view of expanding domestic demand and rising visitor arrivals, Sales and Other Receipts of the establishments reached MOP67.44 billion, up notably by 30% year-on-year. Receipts of Sales of Motor Vehicles & Automotive Fuel (MOP5.19 billion), Retail Trade (MOP40.16 billion) and Wholesale Trade (MOP22.09 billion) increased by 38%, 35% and 21% respectively year-on-year. Total Expenditure of the establishments amounted to MOP60.43 billion, up by 29% year-on-year, of which Operating Expenses (MOP7.52 billion), Purchase of Goods & Commission Paid (MOP48.79 billion) and Compensation of Employees (MOP4.12 billion) increased by 37%, 30% and 11% respectively year-on-year. Furthermore, Gross Value Added (MOP15.01 billion) and Gross Fixed Capital Formation (MOP829 million) increased by 46% and 32% respectively. There were 1,775 market stalls and fixed street stalls operating in 2011, down by 86 year-on-year, comprising 764 market stalls and 1,011 fixed street stalls. Number of persons engaged totalled 2,982, with only 387 being paid employees (13% of total). Receipts and Expenditure amounted to MOP1.32 billion and MOP1.10 billion, up by 12% and 11% respectively year-on-year; Gross Value Added increased by 13% to MOP267 million.
