IPIM Organises Macao Commercial and MICE Sectors to Join the First China International Consumer Products Expo
Organised by the Ministry of Commerce and the People’s Government of Hainan Province, the first China International Consumer Products Expo was held in Haikou, Hainan from 7 to 10 May. To have a better understanding of Hainan province’s practice and enhancing the connection between Macao’s commercial associations and the Expo’s exhibitors, the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) organised 35 representatives of Macao’s commercial and MICE sectors to visit Haikou from 6 to 8 May to participate in the 1st China International Consumer Products Expo. At the event IPIM set up the “Macao Pavilion” to showcase Macao’s business environment and advantages in holding MICE events. On 7 May, an exchange session for Hainan and Macao participants was held, where MICE specialists from both places shared their experiences in organising events. Business matching activities were also included in the session to promote the qualitative development of the MICE sector.

MPI holds Gaming Leadership Seminar Series
To cultivate the high-calibre talent for the gaming and recreation industry in Macao, the Centre for Gaming and Tourism Studies (CJT) of the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) recently arranged three gaming leadership seminars for the students in the Master of Business Administration in Gaming Management programme. Leaders from the gaming industry were invited to give presentations based on their areas of expertise, and to share their experience, knowledge and skills. They are: Mr. Grant Bowie, a seasoned executive with rich experience in gaming, former CEO of MGM China; Mr. Raymond Lo, Senior Vice President, Property General Manager of Altira Macau & Mocha Clubs, Melco Resorts & Entertainment; and Mr. Benny Ho, Director of Cage, Sands China. These industry seminars were well received among the teachers and students at MPI.

Cultural Affairs Bureau extends rental waive of CCM’s Facilities
Since Covid-19 broke out last year, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) has implemented numerous measures to ease the burden caused by the pandemic to arts practitioners and cultural associations, including Macao Cultural Centre’s Rental Waiver scheme. Now, aiming to support a consistent recovery of local associations, IC will extend this Rental Waiver until 31 December 2021.

Mortgage loans statistics – March 2021
According to statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, new approvals of residential mortgage loans (RMLs) and commercial real estate loans (CRELs) both increased in March 2021. With regard to the outstanding balances, both RMLs and CRELs witnessed declines.

UM team wins first prize at 2021 Bank of China Trophy One Million Dollar Macao Regional Entrepreneurship Competition
Teams formed by University of Macau (UM) students, namely ‘BrainLightning’ and ‘Medical Cloud Intelligent Clinical Devices Team’, recently won a first prize and a third prize, respectively, at the 2021 Bank of China Trophy One Million Dollar Macao Regional Entrepreneurship Competition, for their products, an array brain temperature monitor and an intelligent and safe clinical information infusion pump. The second prize went to a team named ‘Macau Smart Medical Equipment Smart Smoke Evacuator’. The winning teams will represent Macao in the grand final of the One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition.

A further vaccination point to be operational on 17 May
The Government will set up a new COVID-19 vaccination point at the University Hospital, that will become operational on Monday (17 May). It will offer inoculations of the Sinopharm vaccine for a daily quota of up to 150 people.

Demographic statistics for the 1st quarter of 2021
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population as at end-March 2021 dropped by 600 quarter-to-quarter to 682,500; female population (363,400) accounted for 53.2% of the total.

Tourism tax is waived to bolster travel trade towards recovery
To put into practice the “2021 Scheme for Employment Security, Economic Stabilization and Care for Residents’ Livelihood”, the Macao Special Administrative Region Government is launching measures to reduce/exempt a range of taxes and extend the coverage of tourism tax exemption, which is expected to benefit over 370 tourism service establishments and involve about 379 million patacas in the budget. The measure aims to revive the economy and propel Macao’s travel trade towards revitalization.

Large Conferences Held in Macao Boost Peripheral Industries
The Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) has always maintained close cooperation with the MICE industry, continuously introduced more quality MICE projects into Macao, and vigorously facilitated MICE activities of professional brands and those centred on industry to be hosted in Macao, in order to promote the city’s moderately diversified economic development. With the assistance of the “One-stop Service” for MICE Bidding and Support, three large conferences – mainly corporate conferences – will be held in Macao by the end of June. It is estimated that over 8,000 people will attend the conferences and it is expected that this will boost the peripheral industries such as retail, catering and hotels, and stimulate the economic recovery of the community.
