The “Brushing Up Your English” activities created a campus-wide English learning environment at the Macao Polytechnic Institute (“MPI”) to enhance the students’ proficiency in the language. This series of activities, which was the fruitful outcome of a collaboration between the Student Affairs Office and the MPI-BELL Centre of English (the “Centre”), included an exam preparation course, an Easter party, a singing contest, a social interaction course, writing workshops, lunch gatherings and movie nights. Well received among the undergraduates, the activities not only brushed up their English but also further lightened the joyful campus atmosphere.

To cope with the new requirements of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) which will be implemented in 2021 on the security of the air cargo and mail supply chain, the Civil Aviation Authority of Macao SAR (AACM) has hired an ICAO aviation security consultant to conduct a workshop in Macao for reviewing the current cargo security operations in our industry in order that the consultant can make recommendations on devising the security policies for Macao’s air cargo and mail supply chain.

The Macao Orchestra (OM, from the Portuguese acronym), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, will present various distinctive weekend concerts to enrich the public’s cultural and artistic lives, including the family concert “Children’s Day Concert – The Symphonic Magical Fairyland”, to be held on 2 June, at 2:30pm, at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium; the “Weekend Music Party – World Cup Cheers”, to be held on 16 June, at 4pm, at the Dom Pedro V Theatre; and the concert “Heroes: A Video Game Symphony”, which is popular worldwide and premiered in Asia, to be held on 30 June, at 8pm, at The Venetian Theatre, with the concert venue supported by The Venetian Macao. Tickets for the three concerts are now available at the Macau Ticketing Network and music lovers are advised to purchase tickets as soon as possible.

The 30^th Macao Arts Festival (MAF), organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), will be held next year in May. In order to promote the development of local arts, IC invites all registered local associations and individuals to submit proposals of local programmes until 6 July. The selected works will be included in next year’s MAF programme.

Organized by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, and co-organized by the Macao Government Tourism Office and the Macao Foundation, the exhibition “Marc Chagall, Light and Colour in Southern France”, was inaugurated on Thursday, 31 May, at 6:30pm, on the 1^st floor of the MAM. The exhibition, one of the highlights of the 29^th Macao Arts Festival and of the 2018 Le French May, features over 100 works by Marc Chagall created between the 1950s and the 1970s. It includes paintings, gouaches, lithographs, costumes and tapestries, showing the pre-eminence of light and colour in his creations and transporting the public to a distant realm of illusion.

On 24 to 31 May, the Institute for Tourism Studies’ (IFT) Global Centre for Tourism Education and Training (hereafter the Centre) organised an eight-day training programme titled “Capacity Building for Destination Marketing & Tourism Development”. It is the fifth time of training held by the Centre and United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). A group of 19 representatives from “One Belt, One Road” countries namely Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Mainland China, as well as Macao SAR and UNWTO participated in the programme.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export for April 2018 amounted to MOP1.09 billion, up by 30.2% year-on-year; value of re-exports (MOP955 million) increased by 38.0%, with that of Articles for casino rising by 370.4%; meanwhile, value of domestic exports (MOP137 million) slid by 6.6%, with that of Copper & articles thereof decreasing by 22.4%. Total merchandise import rose by 25.9% year-on-year to MOP6.75 billion, of which imports of Mobile phones, Beauty, cosmetic & skin-care products and Handbags & wallets expanded by 172.4%, 60.1% and 50.5% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit in April amounted to MOP5.66 billion.
