UM, Oxford, CUHK hope to increase collaboration in training professionals
The University of Macau (UM), the University of Oxford’s Saint Anne’s College and Centre for Personalised Medicine, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Dr Stanley Ho Medical Development Foundation recently initiated a seminar, where representatives exchanged ideas on the latest achievements in biomedical sciences and discussed opportunities for collaboration in teaching and research as well as in training professionals.

Consumer Council conducted its latest ‘Supermarket price survey’ on 15 January for the implementation of Section 2b), Article 10, Law 4/95/M of 12 June. Surveyed locations included 13 supermarkets in Sé Parish.

Tourist price index (TPI) for the 4th quarter of 2017
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the average Tourist Price Index (TPI) for 2017 rose by 0.77% year-on-year to 131.87 after two years of decline. The increase was mainly attributable to rising charges for hotel accommodation and restaurant services, and dearer prices of Chinese local food products; meanwhile, falling prices of clothing and handbags as well as lower airfares tapered off part of the increase. Analysed by main section of goods and services, price indices of Restaurant Services and Accommodation grew by 5.11% and 4.97% respectively year-on-year, whereas those of Clothing & Footwear and Transport & Communications fell by 7.16% and 6.52% respectively.

Foreign exchange reserves and nominal effective exchange rate index for the pataca – December 2017
The Monetary Authority of Macao announced today that the preliminary estimate of Macao SAR’s foreign exchange reserves amounted to MOP162.3 billion (USD20.17 billion) at the end of December 2017. The reserves increased by 3.1% from the revised value of MOP157.4 billion (USD19.57 billion) for the previous month. Macao SAR’s foreign exchange reserves at end-December 2017 represented 11 times the currency in circulation or 90.5% of pataca M2 at end-November 2017.

Consumer Council surveyed airlines terms and conditions
The Consumer Council conducted a questionnaire on the terms and conditions and service fees of airline companies that operate routes departing from Macao. The feedback shows that a service fee of up to $800 will be charged by a certain airline company if a consumer has not taken the flight and files refunds of Macao Airport passenger service fees and airport security fee due to personal reasons. Consumers are reminded to compare the service terms and charged items of different airline companies before purchasing their tickets, meanwhile, consumers should not only consider the base fare when purchasing discounted air tickets but also take into consideration the amount charged for checked baggage and meals.

CEFCO 2018 Promotes Macao to be Base for MICE Training Courses for Portuguese-speaking Countries
The 14th China Expo Forum for International Cooperation (CEFCO 2018) was held in Qingdao from 11th to 13th Jan 2018. Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) organized the representatives of Macao Convention and Exhibition Industry (also known as MICE industry) to take part in the event and collaboratively promote the advantages of Macao’s convention and exhibition, expanding the professional exchange and cooperation between Macao and overseas regions. Many of the representatives from the sector considered this activity valuable for Macao’s MICE industry in terms of broadening horizon, developing local MICE industry globally and attracting more international organizers to set Macao an MICE destination.
