The University of Macau (UM) recently awarded scholarships to 131 outstanding students at the UM Scholarship Presentation Ceremony 2017. More than UM 400 students received scholarships in the past year.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that attributable to the catastrophic typhoon on 23 August, visitor arrivals edged down by 0.6% year-on-year to 2,866,400 in August 2017, down by 1.8% month-to-month. Same-day visitors (1,318,619) decreased by 6.2% year-on-year while overnight visitors (1,547,781) increased by 4.8%. The average length of stay of visitors went up by 0.1 day year-on-year to 1.3 days, with that of overnight visitors (2.2 days) rising by 0.1 day and that of same-day visitors remaining unchanged at 0.2 day.

The 22^nd Macao International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF) will take place from 19 to 21 October 2017 (Thursday to Saturday) at the Venetian Macao. In order to enhance Macao’s role as a Business and Trade Co-operation Service Platform between Mainland China and Portuguese Speaking Countries, while further participating in the tasks of constructing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, MIF has invited Angola and Guangdong as its “Partner Country” and “Partner Province” this year. This year’s MIF will be showcasing various pavilions, holding different themed forums and conferences, featuring special highlights and promoting activities. MIF will also be jointly organising presentations and seminars on Cambodia’s investment and tourism with Cambodia – one of the countries along the “Belt and Road” for the first time, trying to grasp the business opportunities brought about by the “Belt and Road” Initiative. The “2017 Portuguese Speaking Countries Products and Services Exhibition (Macao) – 2017 PLPEX” will be held concurrently with the 22^nd MIF and become an independent exhibition this year.

Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) participates in the “Beautiful China – Liaoning Tour” Promotional Event and the Meeting for Tourism Exchange and Cooperation between Liaoning, Hong Kong and Macao. During the event, MGTO signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Tourism Cooperation with the Liaoning Tourism Bureau today (21 September) to foster mutual exchange and cooperation in the tourism field.

Yao Lingmin from the University of Macau (UM) Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering (IAPME) recently became the first PhD student to graduate from the institute after passing her thesis defense with excellence. Soon after her graduation, she was appointed an assistant professor at Guangzhou University.

Co-organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) and the Macau Artist Society, “Purge one’s mind: Trio exhibition by Leong Kit Man, Im Hok Lon and Mok Hei Sai” will be inaugurated on Monday, 25 September, at 6pm, at the Lakeside Gallery - Room S1 in the Anim’Arte NAM VAN. It is the first painting and calligraphy works exhibition organized at Anim’Arte NAM VAN, featuring a total of 25 artworks by three young artists. The exhibition is open until 25 November. All are welcome to appreciate the painting and calligraphy works of the new generation of artists.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the Composite CPI in August 2017 increased by 1.36% year-on-year to 109.57, the highest year-on-year growth since January 2017. The increment in August was attributable to rising tuition fees, dearer prices of adults’ footwear and gasoline, as well as higher charges for eating out and outpatient services.

He will give a talk titled ‘Teaching in a Digital Era with Wicked Approaches’. During the talk, Li will share his insights on innovative teaching methods and discuss how to incorporate technology in the classroom. All are welcome.
