UM rector leads delegation to visit Vietnamese universities and sign cooperation agreements

To further expand the University of Macau’s (UM) international cooperation network, UM Rector Yonghua Song led a delegation to visit several top universities in Vietnam and sign cooperation agreements to foster international exchange and cooperation between UM and Vietnamese universities.


CAS academician gives talk at UM on how mathematics drives modern technology

The University of Macau (UM) held a talk titled ‘Mathematics Drives Modern Technology’ as part of the University Lecture Series. Tang Tao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), president of Nanfang College, Guangzhou, and chair professor at Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College, was the speaker. During the talk, Prof Tang discussed the important role of mathematics in technological development across various fields.


External merchandise trade statistics for the first three quarters of 2024

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that external merchandise trade totalled MOP105.20 billion in the first three quarters of 2024, down by 8.4% compared to the same period last year (MOP114.88 billion). Total value of merchandise exports grew by 5.0% year-on-year to MOP9.99 billion, of which value of re-exports (MOP8.87 billion) increased by 6.2% while value of domestic exports (MOP1.12 billion) decreased by 3.9%. Total value of merchandise imports dropped by 9.6% year-on-year to MOP95.22 billion. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP85.23 billion in the first three quarters of 2024, down by MOP10.62 billion from MOP95.85 billion in the same period last year.


Package tours and hotel occupancy rate for the first three quarters of 2024

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that inbound package tour visitors totalled 1,497,000 in the first three quarters of 2024, an uplift of 101.2% year-on-year. The average occupancy rate of guest rooms of hotel establishments rose by 4.8 percentage points year-on-year to 85.4%; number of guests increased by 11.2% to 10,889,000, and their average length of stay remained at 1.7 nights.





IAM prevents and controls pest infestations on Chinese Banyan trees

The tree maintenance staff of the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) continuously carry out inspections of street trees in the various districts. Recently, they found that Chinese Banyan trees in multiple districts have been affected by Phauda flammans, which causes the sparse leaves in the tree crowns. IAM has immediately used preventive and treatment medication to suppress the pest infestations. Meanwhile, notices were hung on trees on which pesticide has been used, so as to remind the public to avoid coming into contact with these trees.


Beware of fraudulent “point expiry” SMS from Aomi APP impersonators to prevent credit card information theft

The Judiciary Police (PJ) uncovered a scam where fraudsters impersonate "Aomi" and randomly send text messages that claim "the points in the customers’ accounts are about to expire," enticing recipients to click on the embedded links that will lead them to a counterfeit "Aomi" website. Scammers lure residents into entering their credit card information under the guise of exchanging points for gifts at discounted prices. The scheme is an attempt to steal credit card information to conduct large-sum, unauthorized transactions.
