Today (21 August) is the first day of the new academic year at the University of Macau (UM). The various faculties, residential colleges, and administrative departments were busy welcoming old and new students. Some upperclassmen shared study tips with the freshmen and told them how to make the most of the resources on campus in order to know themselves and expand their networks. Many freshmen were very excited about the four years ahead, saying that they hope to work hard, learn from each other, and surpass themselves.

In order to let the community know more about the non-mandatory central provident fund system (the System), the Social Security Fund (abbreviated to FSS in Macao) has held its first explanatory session about the System at the convention hall of the Macao Science Center in order to explain the System to the government-funded social welfare organizations and the event attracted nearly 200 people.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the Composite CPI in July 2017 increased by 1.03% year-on-year to 109.46, slightly lower than the 1.06% growth in June. The increment was attributable to higher charges for eating out and outpatient services, as well as rising tuition fees and dearer prices of adults’ footwear.

A fire and rescue exercise for traffic accident was jointly held by Fire Services, Transport Bureau, Public Security Police Force, University of Macau and the underwater tunnel management company in the underwater tunnel of the new campus of the University of Macau at Hengqin in the early hours of 19 August 2017. The exercise was intended to strengthen coordination and communication capacities between Fire Services and related departments for underwater tunnel incident, in order to enhance emergency response for similar incidents and operation efficiency of Fire Services personnel.

Co-organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region, the University of Hong Kong, the Jao Tsung-I Petite École Fan Club and the Jao Studies Foundation and held by the Macao Museum of Art and the Jao Tsung-I Petite École of the University of Hong Kong, the exhibition “The Glamour of Jao’s Lotus － Touring Exhibition of Lotus-themed Artworks by Professor Jao Tsung-I” was inaugurated yesterday (18 August) at the Handover Gift Museum of Macao Special Exhibition Hall. This exhibition runs until 17 September and is one of the activities which mark the 100^th anniversary of Professor Jao Tsung-I, showcasing 39 sets of excellent lotus flower paintings by the Professor.

Macao Polytechnic Institute has successfully held the opening ceremony for the new academic year 2017-2018 in the afternoon of August 18 at the MPI Sports Pavilion. This year has witnessed a total number of 900 new students getting enrolled in various MPI programs, more than 80% are local students, and about 10% from the mainland and overseas. During the ceremony, more than 500 outstanding students were awarded scholarships sponsored by governmental agencies, organizations, enterprises, and individuals. The institute adheres to its management philosophy of "Small but beautiful and exquisite" and also emphasizes its long-term commitments to cultivate talents for the Macao community. Witnessed by all the guests, and both solemn and touching, all the freshmen swore an oath - "MPI's heart, our new start" - in joining the MPI family.
