Marta and Elena, both daughters of old Secundino, the former owner of a Macanese restaurant, return to Macao to take over the eatery left to them by their recently deceased father. The sisters arrive at a time when the economy continues to face difficulties, despite rising casino revenues and tourist numbers. This story unfolds against the background of the permanent closure of the satellite casinos and a surge in consumerism in the mainland. To keep the place open or to close it – that is the big question. What should they do, and how can they survive if they choose to keep the restaurant open?
Created by the Macanese community, Patuá theatre is a unique performing art, enlisted on the Intangible Cultural Heritage of China back in 2021. Patuá is a creole language rooted in ancient Portuguese, enriched with influences from Malay, Cantonese, English, and Spanish. It vividly embodies Macao’s cosmopolitan character, showcasing the harmonious coexistence of diverse cultures where East meets West.
