UM’s latest study discovers new mechanism to block recurrence and metastasis of breast cancer
A research team led by Chuxia Deng, dean of the University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), recently found that breast cancer susceptibility gene 1 (BRCA1) plays an important role in regulating mitophagy and mitochondrial dynamics: it maintains a healthy mitochondrial network and reduces inflammasome activity, which blocks the recurrence and metastasis of breast cancer after surgery. The research study was sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, UM, and the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund. It has been published as a cover article in the well-known international journal Advanced Science.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that both the general unemployment rate (1.7%) and the unemployment rate of local residents (2.3%) for November 2019 - January 2020 held steady from the previous period (October-December 2019). Meanwhile, the underemployment rate (0.4%) dropped by 0.1 percentage point.

Contribution Deadline Extends to Next Monday and FSS Appeals to Employers to Make Payments as Soon as Possible
In response to the epidemic situation, the Social Security Fund (abbreviated to FSS in Macao) extended the payment deadline for the contributions (the fourth quarter of 2019) to 16th March. The FSS appeals to employers to make their payments as early as possible and those who make their payments late are required to pay a late payment interest and may be fined.

Residential property price index for November 2019 – January 2020
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the overall residential property price index for November 2019 - January 2020 decreased by 0.9% over the previous period (October - December 2019) to 265.3. The indices for the Macao Peninsula (266.5) and Taipa & Coloane (260.3) dropped by 1.0% and 0.6% respectively.
