UM holds convocation to welcome 3,000 new students Rector Song encourages students to foster a sense of mission
The University of Macau (UM) today (15 August) held the convocation and an orientation seminar for the 2019/2020 academic year to welcome 3,000 new students as well as faculty members. UM Rector Yonghua Song gave the new students their first lecture at UM. During the talk, Rector Song said that higher education experienced great changes in the 21st century and emphasised the inclusion of innovation in higher education. He also encouraged the students to devote themselves to study in order to become innovative individuals with a love for their country, a global mindset, international competitiveness, and a sense of mission to society and to themselves.

Unprecedentedly 12 fireworks shows set to light up Macao's skyline for the 30th Macao International Fireworks Display Contest
In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region and the Macao International Fireworks Display Contest (“the Contest”) to reach its 30th edition this year, Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has invited an unprecedented number of twelve extraordinary world-class pyrotechnic teams to present twelve spectacular fireworks displays themed as “Duo Celebrations for Macao” from early September until the 1st October Golden Week. The organizer of the Contest, MGTO, held a press conference today (15th August) to unveil details about the Contest and a series of pertinent outreach programs.

Consumer Council conducted its specific price survey on tissue papers, over-the-counter drugs, and milk powder on 15 August for the implementation of Section 2b), Article 10, Law 4/95/M of 12 June. The mentioned survey has been uploaded to the Council’s website (www.consumer.gov.mo), it is also available on the Council’s“Macao Supermarket Price Information Platform” app, as well as on the Council’s WeChat account page.

According to the statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, the proportion of international business in the local banking sector retreated in the second quarter of 2019. At end-June 2019, the share of international assets in total banking assets decreased to 85.9% from 86.3% at end-March 2019, while the share of international liabilities in total banking liabilities fell to 82.1% from 82.2%.

The Consumer Council conducted its ‘Supermarket price survey’ of the first-half of August on 14 August for the implementation of Section 2b), Article 10, Law 4/95/M of 12 June. Surveyed locations included 7 supermarkets in Taipa and Coloane Parish. Consumers may now check the report data on the Council’s website (www.consumer.gov.mo), the “Supermarket Price Information Platform” app, or the Council’s WeChat account.

Expert in mechanics Yang Wei to give talk at UM next Thursday on innovation-driven development in mainland
The University of Macau (UM) on 22 August (next Thursday) will hold a lecture on innovation-driven development and basic research in mainland China, as part of the University Lecture Series. Yang Wei, a renowned expert in mechanics, will be the keynote speaker. Yang will discuss the driving force behind innovation in mainland China, its characteristics, and the path forward. Foreign exchange reserves and nominal effective exchange rate index for the pataca – July 2019
The Monetary Authority of Macao announced today that the preliminary estimate of Macao SAR’s foreign exchange reserves amounted to MOP167.0 billion (USD20.71 billion) at the end of July 2019. The reserves increased by 0.3% from the revised value of MOP166.4 billion (USD20.68 billion) for the previous month. Macao SAR’s foreign exchange reserves at end-July 2019 represented 10 times the currency in circulation or 80.4% of pataca M2 at end-June 2019.

“Macao・Creative City of Gastronomy” work meeting convened today to strengthen cross-field creativity and foster sustainable development
The second “Macao・Creative City of Gastronomy” annual work meeting was held today (13 August). Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Alexis Tam, presided over the meeting and expressed affirmation for the contributions of different entities. He highlighted that Macao’s two glamorous calling cards, namely the designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy and the enlisting of the Historic Centre of Macao on the World Heritage List, have gained wide recognition for Macao internationally, which is a boon for destination branding around the world. In the future, the city will carry on collaboration across fields as well as the public and private sectors, harness synergies with innovation and technology to raise Macao’s profile as a Creative City of Gastronomy in concerted efforts. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and other governmental departments concerned, academic institutes, industry organizations and so forth.

Sailings between Macao and Hong Kong Airport Cancelled
As the Hong Kong Airport Authority announced that all flights have been cancelled today, the sailing departing from Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal to Hong Kong International Airport, which is scheduled for 19:45, will be cancelled. The last sailing from Taipa has departed at 15:55. Passengers are advised to contact the ferry operators for sailing arrangement.
