UM to resume postgraduate oral defences on 4 May; students at coursework stage to continue with distance learning
In accordance with the guidelines issued by the Higher Education Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region and considering the actual circumstances of the University of Macau (UM), the university will resume PhD and master’s oral defences on 4 May. Students of PhD, master’s, and postgraduate certificate/diploma programmes at coursework stage will continue with distance learning until the end of this semester. Master’s and PhD students who are at research stage and need to return to the campus for special reasons, such as for their laboratory work and research, should seek approval from the university in advance. UM stresses that students must not return to the campus without approval.

Flags to fly at half-mast to mourn COVID-19 victims
The national flag, along with the flag of the Macao Special Administrative Region, will be displayed at half-mast on Saturday (4 April) to mourn the victims in China of the novel coronavirus and its associated infection COVID-19.

Survey on information technology usage in the household sector for 2019
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that number of households using the Internet in 2019 increased by 6,900 year-on-year to 182,300, accounting for 92.3% of the total households. Number of households using fibre optic broadband connection continued to rise, up by 18.1% year-on-year to 138,800, taking up 76.1% of the total households using the Internet. The proportion of households using mobile broadband to access the Internet (178,500) grew by 3.3 percentage points to 97.9%, indicating that only a small number of households never use mobile broadband at home.

Macao monitoring health of Macao inhabitants that have recovered from COVID-19
Macao has an extensive plan to monitor the health of people living in Macao that have contracted COVID-19 and subsequently recovered. Such checks include follow-up consultations via a specialised out-patient service.

UM launches training courses for SME owners to lower impact of epidemic, registrations open next Monday
The University of Macau (UM)’s Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) will launch two training courses, Marketing and Service Strategy, and Crisis Management and Leadership, for owners of small- and medium-sized enterprises in Macao. The courses aim to enhance the marketing and risk management skills of local SME owners, as well as to reduce the impact of the epidemic on Macao’s job market and to increase the competitiveness and adaptability of the local labour force. Both courses were originally priced at MOP 3, 900, and are now offered for free. The registration period is from 6 April to 15 April. Quotas are limited, and applications will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis.
