UM scholar publishes paper in top linguistics journal
Ronald Fong, an assistant professor from the Department of English, University of Macau (UM), recently published his paper titled ‘Chinese Motion-Directional Construction: A Conceptual and Cognitive Analysis’ in Studies in Chinese Linguistics, one of the most prestigious journals in the fields of linguistics and Chinese language. An international academic publication dedicated to the comparative study of Chinese language and linguistics, the journal provides a platform for research studies of comparative linguistics and dialectal grammar with a comparative approach. Published by De Gruyter, the journal has a long history and has recently shifted its focus to linguistic theory and its relationship to the Chinese language.

10th anniversary of “Tap Siac Craft Market” Registrations for local and overseas stall operators open today
Organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), the “Tap Siac Craft Market” will be held from 13 to 15 April and from 20 to 22 April 2018. Marking its 10thanniversary, the “Tap Siac Craft Market” will feature a total of 220 stalls, allowing local and overseas cultural and creative entities to showcase and sell their original brands and products. Stall registrations are now open and all interested parties are welcome to register. Applicants from Macao, Malaysia and Singapore are welcome to register until Tuesday, 13 March, at 5:45pm. The Government is inviting comments from the public on human rights in the Macao SAR, in order to prepare a report as part of the third cycle of the Universal Periodic Review of the People’s Republic of China at the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council.

UM scholar discovers 800-year-old top-quality hand-made paper from Song dynasty
Li Ping, a professor from the Department of History, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Macau (UM), who is also a visiting professor at UM’s Centre for Chinese History and Culture, recently participated in field trips with his students to the National University of Singapore (NUS) Chinese Library to examine a hand-written copy of Shiji (also known as ‘Records of the Grand Historian’). As a result of a research study that lasted two years and a half, Prof Li discovered top-quality hand-made Chinese letter paper used in Faxi Temple in Haiyan county, dating back more than 800 years.

Private sector construction and real estate transactions for the 4th quarter of 2017
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 3,241 building units and parking spaces were purchased and sold as per Stamp Duty record in the fourth quarter of 2017, and the total value of transactions was MOP21.57 billion, up by 15.0% and 38.1% respectively quarter-to-quarter. Purchase and sale of residential units increased by 530 to 2,618 units, and the total value went up by 43.2% to MOP17.78 billion. Transaction volume of pre-sale residential units surged by 219.9% to 803 units and the value soared by 203.7% to MOP7.36 billion, attributable to a large-scale housing estate released for sale during the quarter. Meanwhile, purchase and sale of existing residential units dropped by 22 to 1,815 units while the transaction value went up by 4.3% to MOP10.41 billion.
