IFT Students’ Enthusiasm in Studies and Extra-curricular Activities

Institute for Tourism Studies emphasises on both theoretical and practical learning. Students can choose to perform a 6-month internship programme in Macao or overseas organisations which are related to their specialisations, so as to apply the theory and practical techniques they have learnt in classes to actual work environment. It is hoped that students can keep up with market demands and get ready for their future career. Besides studies, IFT always encourage and support students to join more public activities in the areas of sports, culture, language, art, creativity etc., in order to maintain their mental and physical well-being. In the academic year of 2012/13, IFT students participated in various extra-curricular activities and achieved outstanding results in sports events:
- The 9th University Games of the People's Republic of China - 100m Breaststroke Men 1st Runner-up, which broke the record of Macao and was the first medal that students in Macao had ever won in this game;
- FINA World Championships, Sweden - participated and broke 2 short course records of Macao:
- Macao University Bowling Championship – the Champion
- Macau Open Taekwondo Championship - the Champion in Black Belt Female Adult Group A and 2nd Runner-up in Male Group F
- Macao University Volleyball Championship – the Champion in both women and men category;
- The 21st Hong Kong University Science and Technology Volleyball Tournament – the Champion in men category and 2nd Runner-up in women category Other than sports activities, students also enthusiastically engaged and performed very well in other activities such as the 1st Young Macanese Cooking Competition, the 10th Macao Inter-Tertiary Debate Competition, the 4th Higher Educational Institutions Games' Challenge in Pearl River Delta Region, the 5th Tourism and Hospitality Quiz, the 2nd Macao-wide Business Knowledge Competition, the 8th Macao Inter-Universities Writing Competition, etc. IFT has been offering various types of extra-curricular activities for students to join, including jazz dance, step aerobics, Portuguese folk dance, samba, oil painting, sketching, architectural drawing, photography, film appreciation, choir, guitar, dragon boat, fencing, volleyball, badminton, basketball, squash, soccer, hockey, taekwondo, English/Mandarin debate, Portuguese, French, everyday Mandarin for foreigners, professional etiquette, theme cake workshop, skin care and make up workshop. IFT hopes that students can effectively utilise their spare time, participate in more extra-curricular activities to get to know more people and new things in order to broaden their view and social network, these are all the essentials that tourism professionals should possess.


Tourist Price Index (TPI) for the 2nd Quarter 2013

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the Tourist Price Index (TPI) for the second quarter of 2013 increased by 6.08% year-on-year to 125.80, attributable to higher charges for hotel accommodation and restaurant services. Notable increase was observed in the price index of Food, Alcoholic Drinks & Tobacco (+9.62%); Accommodation (+8.56%) and Clothing & Footwear (+8.52%) on account of rising hotel room rate, as well as dearer prices of local food products, alcoholic beverages & tobacco and handbags. On the contrary, price index of Miscellaneous Goods decreased by 2.85% year-on-year. TPI for the second quarter of 2013 decreased by 6.22% quarter-to-quarter, of which price index of Accommodation and Transport & Communications dropped by 23.06% and 6.43% respectively due to lower hotel room rate and airfare after the Lunar New Year. However, price index of Clothing & Footwear rose by 3.81% quarter-to-quarter. The average TPI for the last four quarters ended the second quarter of 2013 increased by 5.47% from the previous period, with marked increase being observed in the price index of Clothing & Footwear (+13.16%); Food, Alcoholic Drinks & Tobacco (+8.13%); and Entertainment & Cultural Activities (+7.84%). For the first half year of 2013, TPI went up by 7.01% year-on-year, of which price index of Clothing & Footwear; Food, Alcoholic Drinks & Tobacco and Transport & Communications increased by 14.26%, 9.65% and 7.47% respectively. The 2009/2010-based TPI reflects the price change of goods and services purchased by visitors. Sections of TPI goods and services are selected according to the consumption pattern of visitors, namely Food, Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco; Clothing & Footwear; Accommodation; Restaurant Services; Transport & Communications; Medicine & Personal Goods; Entertainment & Cultural Activities; and Miscellaneous Goods.


Package Tours and Hotel Occupancy Rate for May 2013

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that visitor arrivals in package tours increased by 7.7% year-on-year to 721,104 in May 2013. Visitors arrivals in package tours mainly came from Mainland China (547,803), with 174,678 coming from Guangdong Province, followed by those from Taiwan, China (43,926); Hong Kong (30,048) and the Republic of Korea (25,011). In the first five months of 2013, visitors in package tours totalled 3,785,408, up by 10.7% year-on-year. Outbound residents using services of travel agencies increased by 20.1% year-on-year to 113,268 in May this year; those travelling in package tours totalled 41,717, with Mainland China; Thailand and Taiwan, China being the main destinations. In the first five months of 2013, outbound residents increased by 26.1% year-on-year to 593,798, of which 218,664 travelled in package tours. There were 99 hotels and guesthouses operating at the end of May 2013, providing 28,065 rooms, up by 16.4% year-on-year; guest rooms of 5-star hotels accounted for 66.5% of the total. In May 2013, guests checking into hotels and guesthouses rose by 20.3% year-on-year to 907,831 guests; those staying in 5-star hotels soared by 43.9%, at 562,281. The average length of stay of guests decreased by 0.1 night year-on-year to 1.3 nights. The majority of guests came from Mainland China (59.2% of total) and Hong Kong (16.0%). The average occupancy rate of hotels and guesthouses decreased by 0.5 percentage points to 77.6%, with that of 4-star hotels at 80.5%. In the first five months of 2013, number of guests increased by 16.9% year-on-year to 4,329,662; the average occupancy rate stood at 79.4%, down by 2.5 percentage points. In the first five months of 2013, visitor-guests took up 71.6% of the total number of overnight visitors, higher than the 64.6% in the same period of 2012.


Foreign Exchange Reserves and Nominal Effective Exchange Rate Index for the Pataca June 2013

The Monetary Authority of Macao announced today that the preliminary estimate of Macao SAR's foreign exchange reserves amounted to MOP127.0 billion (USD15.90 billion) at the end of June 2013. The reserves fell by 1.2% from the revised value of MOP128.5 billion (USD16.07 billion) for the previous month. When compared with a year earlier, the reserves dropped by MOP7.5 billion or 5.6%. Macao SAR's foreign exchange reserves at end-June 2013 represented 15 times the currency in circulation or 130.0% of Pataca M2 at end-May 2013. The trade-weighted effective exchange rate index for the pataca, a gauge of the domestic currency's exchange rates against the currencies of Macao's major trading partners, dropped by 0.62 points month-to-month and 0.94 points year-on-year to 97.77 in June 2013. 2013 MFE Comes to a Successful End

The three-day event, Macao Franchise Expo 2013 (2013MFE) came to a successful end. The overall turnout was significantly high, up to17,000. A total of 1,545 business matching sessions have been achieved, which resulted in the signing of 28 cooperation protocols. In his closing speech, Mr. Agostinho Vong, Senior Manager of Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute concluded that the scale and the level of the internationalisation of 2013 MFE have been gradually expanding and increasing which could be seen in the increase in the area of the venue and the first-time participation of European exhibitors. The participation of groups of media partners from Guangdong province and Hong Kong has strengthened the promotion on a regional basis. Also, by means of social networking website and other emerging media, the event attracted a substantial number of trade visitors from different fields.
A total of 1,545 on-site business matching were arranged, (1,346 sessions last year), a rise of nearly 15% year-on-year, of which 93% was specially arranged for SMEs and business beginners. A 12% increase year-on-year has contributed to the on-site signing of 28 cooperation protocols, (25 last year), including agreements on franchise catering, branded chain store, brand sales agency, branding promotion and collaborative agreements of business associations.

Three forums with different themes and a series of professional presentation sessions during the 3-day event has broadened a lot the horizon of all participants and encouraged them to learn more of how to seek business opportunities through chain and franchise. The business matching area created a lively ambience for entrepreneurs to explore the possibility of business cooperation and achieve mutual benefits. Moreover, the 2013 MFE Brand Re-packaging Consultancy Pavilion and One-stop Service provided information and advisory services to all business starters and SMEs interested to expand their business scopes through chain operation and franchising. This makes Macao as a business platform to attract international brands and chain store operators with 2013 MFE as an ideal occasion to showcase different brands and services both from home and abroad to strengthen exchange and collaboration and connect Macao with overseas markets. According to the figures and number of participants collected by the organiser, the event this year has achieved the desired outcomes, with a total of over 17,000 visitors. It is believed to be largely due to the weekend holiday and the intriguing activities held during the event this year, including a number of unique brand shows and free food and beverage tasting in some exhibitors. According to the preliminary data collected from a survey conducted during the three days event, visitors' age ranged from 18 to 30 years-old (46.54 %) and from 31 to 45 years (36.87 %). This indicates that the MFE has met its objective of creating a platform for potential young entrepreneurs to start their own business. Most of the exhibitors were highly satisfied (61.11 %) and appreciate the Organisers for the arrangement. They also expressed their interest in returning for the event next year. The event has gradually served as an international business platform to foster interactive communications and collaborations for a broader spectrum of business opportunities and investments. This certainly helps to foster a desirable environment for local young talents and SMEs to establishing brand images and entrepreneur culture in Macao. Building on the fruitful results and previous experiences and in line with making Macao a new height towards "World-class tourism and leisure centre", MFE continues to strengthen the trade service platform to promote local brand products on an international scale and attract more international brands to invest in Macao, in order to promote economic diversification.

Positive feedback received on 2nd day of 2013 MFE with various cooperation agreements reached

On second day of the Macao Franchise Expo 2013 (2013 MFE, overall turnout was significantly high with incessant visitors admitted to the venue, including business representatives and the general public. The expo has received favourable feedback from visitors. A total of 781 business matching sessions were arranged, which resulted in the signing of 5 cooperation protocols. Endless gimmicks to present product features The second day of 2013 MFE has attracted large number trade visitors, families and also business professionals. Each exhibitor devised ingenious strategies to attract visitors' attention. Some opt for interactive techniques to present product advantages, for instance, children's fashion show and hugging lovely mascots, which piques interest of audience of all ages. Moreover, many food and beverage exhibitors offered free tasting, which received enthusiastic response from visitors. Exquisite Japanese ice-cream in various flavours also offered delightful experience to visitors. Over 2,500 cups of ice-cream were sold within 2 days. The MFE Plaza, a food and beverage tasting area where the floor is cosily decorated in a Portuguese cobblestoned-style for visitors, generates a lively atmosphere for the expo. Also, expo-goers can buy what they love as part of exhibition this year included retail sales. These resulted in effective promotion of all sorts to showcase high quality products and leverage brand image. Intriguing exhibits pique great interest of expo-goers In addition, the event also showcase a large number of exquisite and rare exhibits from different countries and regions, including exclusive European crystal art crafts and natural petrified wood with a history of over hundred million years. The wood exhibits of the Indonesian exhibitor, is believed to come into being at Mesozoic Jurassic period, which attracted a big crowd of viewers lining up for photo shooting. Some visitors claimed that the exhibit is such a worldly treasure and looks unbelievably gorgeous. Exhibitors appreciate the fruitful outcome Italian exhibitors who participate in the event for the first time expressed that the result were so far better than expected and 2013 MFE has served as a bridge for European crafted work to enter China, offering many European manufacturers an opportunity to learn more about the different cultures and the local market demands. With years of experience joining the event, Malaysian exhibitors have been confident to match with local business partners through MFE this year. “Guangdong-Macao Co-operation Industrial Park Joint Investment Promotion and Hengqin Policies Seminar”

Grand Opening of the Macao Franchise Expo 2013

Macao 2013-Jul-12 – the Grand Opening of the Macao Franchise Expo 2013 (2013 MFE) took place at Hall A of the Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel. With the slogan "Brand Expansion Continues, Business Opportunities to be seized" this year, the three-day event continues to strive to promote international franchise and chain business, and brand co-operation through various types of means, including exposition, forum, business matching and product/ service presentation. MFE – The Expanding International Business Platform Building on foundations of previous fruitful results and experiences, 2013 MFE is the fifth year of the event and has been committed to promoting and establishing a business platform to welcome all exhibitors from diversified industries and world-renowned brands to look for business partners in Macao. Forums improve business performance and development During the event, three sessions of "Forum on Chain and Franchise Business Opportunities of International Brands" under different themes, as well as a number of thematic seminars will be held. A series of one-stop support services will be provided, enabling local and overseas business visitors to obtain practical information on franchising operations. Prior to the grand opening, the first "Forum on Chain and Franchise Business Opportunities of International Brands" was held on Thursday. With the theme of "High-end Service Industries Triggering Business Opportunities", the forum thoroughly elaborated on the topic of the prospect of franchise industry and high-end service in a cosmopolitan. The event also invited internationally renowned business leaders and renowned experts from France, Italy and Portugal for its first time to share their insights on how to create business opportunities out of high-end services, attracting over 180 audiences to attend the forum. In her speech, Ms Echo Chan, IPIM's Executive Director, articulated that Macao is a highly open service based economy, with the service sector accounting for over 93% of Macao's GDP. Last year, trade in services amounted to US$57.2 billion, among which, tourism constituted an indispensable part. Macao's steady economic development in recent years has stimulated the prosperous growth of various industries including retail, hotels and restaurants. Many world-renowned brands and enterprises are tapping the Macao market through franchising, chain operation and patent licensing. It has not only enriched the local business environment and market, but is also beneficial to Macao's enterprises in promoting their signature products and services to the rest of the world through chain operation. The second forum today with the theme of "Franchise and Business Opportunities in Digital Era" was held today and numerous experts and scholars from the mainland China and Taiwan met with local counterparts to jointly explore the regional franchising opportunities and discuss how to improve business operation model in the light of current technological advancement. Meanwhile, an award ceremony was held during the forum to give recognition to all those who have contributed and excelled in franchising in various fields of industries. Another forum with the theme of "How to Start Your Business through Franchising", hosted by the Association of Advertising Agents of Macao, will be held with the theme of brand building at 3 p.m. on July 13 Saturday on the aforesaid venue. The brand consultants will provide their services free of charge to illustrate and explore a wide range of techniques and skills, including business planning, management regulating, product packaging and strategies to make the brand more international, with an objective of achieving an innovative and attractive product and examining how brand packaging strategically enhances the brand value. MFE multi-functional area to boost atmosphere for business matching MFE Plaza – a multi-functional zone, in which the kick-off ceremony of the three-day event took place, is set up to serve as a platform for both organiser and exhibitors to promote, demonstrate their products and boost the atmosphere for business matching. Food tasting zone & special programmes fit for all ages Based on the past experiences, food and beverages and retail franchisors received most attention. Therefore, the organizer has invited more brands and franchisors from these two areas to participate in 2013 MFE. As in previous MFEs, there will be a Food and Beverages Tasting Zone, together with a series of fabulous programmes and shows for a wonderful summer holiday mood. There will be retail sales as well as free giveaways during 2013 MFE Special programmes such as Darts competitions, B Duck "Free Hugs Activity", Fashion Show – Children's wear, Indian Kitchen Cooking Show and more will be held at different times at the expo. This will certainly be a kids-and-family-friendly event for some wonderful summer fun. Admission is free and open to the public tomorrow (on Saturday) from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. while the opening hours on July 14 Sunday will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For public convenience, two routes of shuttle bus service will be available on Saturday and Sunday. Round trip shuttle 1 goes between Estrada Marginal do Hipodromo (near Royal Supermarket, Areia Preta) and MFE venue. Round trip shuttle 2 goes between Avenida Doutor Mário Soares ( Macao Square ) and MFE venue.
