2014 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition (2014MIECF) was successfully concluded today (March 29). The 3-day event, under the theme "Energising Green Business Growth", has attracted 9,245 visitors. MIECF's role as a green platform has been fully utilised through the organisation of the exhibition, forums, presentations and seminars, business matching sessions, networking meetings and cocktail receptions, as well as technical visits, and further promoted the development of the environmental industry and related technology. Since its inception in 2008, there have been constant improvements in the quality of the event, providing opportunities for networking and promotion of business co-operation. During the 3-day event, nearly 800 business matching sessions were held (this number does not include business discussions at the venue arranged freely between the exhibitors and participants). The figure included business matching negotiations for hotels as well as government departments. Countries and regions involved in the business negotiations included Mainland China, Korea, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. The discussions involved environmentally friendly hotel supplies, co-operation in solid waste recycling projects, indoor air purification, LED energy-saving lamps, technological co-operation in sewage treatment, vertical planting techniques, green building materials, waste recycling solutions as well as wastewater management. Regarding the Hosted Buyer Programme, seven major local hotels were invited to participate in the green business matching, including Galaxy Macau Hotel, Holiday Inn Macau, MGM Grand Hotel Macau, Sofitel Hotel Macau at Ponte 16, Emperor Hotel, Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel and San Va Hotel, for the procurement of green products, including hotel supplies, energy-saving systems, renewable energies, green building, solutions and equipment for waste and water treatment. The Organiser has arranged around 70 business matching sessions for the hotel industry. On the other hand, several Macao government departments and education institutions also participated in the procurement discussions for the purchase of environmentally friendly office supplies, water and energy saving equipment, green construction projects, energy saving lamps and electric cars. Over 40 procurement sessions were arranged for local government departments. Several Environmental Industry Networking Meetings were also held during MIECF. The Secretary of State for Environmental Affairs of Portugal has organised a Portuguese business delegation to participate in this year's MIECF, with members including representatives of major enterprises in the area of waste treatment and recycling industries. During the 3-day event, a total of 26 contracts were signed, the signatories came from Mainland China (including Beijing as well as the municipalities of Jiangmen, Zhuhai and Shenzhen in Guangdong Province), Italy, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, involving the following industries: environmental protection, construction and engineering, information exchange, education, co-operation in environmental technology as well as product agent. Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz talks about “The Price of Inequality” at UM

Prof. Joseph E. Stiglitz, Nobel laureate in economic sciences, one of the most important economists of our time, and recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University of Macau (UM), today gave a talk entitled "The Price of Inequality" at UM to a full-house audience.
In his welcome remarks, UM Rector Wei Zhao noted that Prof. Stiglitz was no stranger to UM as he gave a talk on the Asian financial crisis at UM in 2002, which was his first public talk in Asia after he received the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. Rector Wei Zhao praised Prof. Stiglitz as one of the most important and influential economists of our time who has won numerous honours. Rector Wei Zhao also thanked the Environmental Protection Bureau of Macao SAR and the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute for their great support for the talk, which provided a great opportunity for the students to learn from a master economist. In his talk, Prof. Stiglitz pointed out that inequality and the gap between the rich and the poor have been growing within most countries around the world, and developing countries including China are not immune from these trends. He noted that there are many dimensions to inequality, including inequalities in income, wealth, health, exposure to environmental hazards, and access to justice. Data show that in the past few years, the incomes and wealth of the rich have been growing at an astounding rate, and a disproportionately larger share of the economic pie has gone to the top 1% of the population. Prof. Stiglitz thinks that each aspect of inequality has its causes, including discrimination, social customs and conventions, laws and regulations, and globalisation. He believes that society should ensure equal opportunities for all children. "What we mean by equality of opportunity is that a child, no matter where is born, no matter who his parents are, will have the ability to live up to his potential," said Prof. Stiglitz. "But in fact when we look at our society, it's not the case." Prof. Stiglitz discussed how inequality affected young people's upward mobility, citing examples of some students in the United States who, because their parents are not wealthy and well-connected, had to borrow money to go to college, only to find that after graduation they couldn't afford unpaid internships, and ended up waiting tables in the restaurants. He mentioned that Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, said in her recent talk to leading Chinese officials in Beijing that more inequality leads to lower economic growth and more economic instability, and expressed concern that China ought to be doing more to address the problems of inequality. During the Q&A session led by UM's Faculty of Business Administration Dean Prof. Jacky So, some audience asked about China's development, Prof. Stiglitz said that even as China is slowing down its growth, 7% is a number that economists did not even think of as feasible 40 years ago. He also mentioned that GDP is not a good measure of economic growth, because environmental protection, health care, social stability and equality are also very important that deserve the government's attention. Prof. Stiglitz is the chair of the Commission of Experts of the President of the United Nation General Assembly on Reforms of the International Monetary and Financial System. He is a professor at Columbia University, where he is also the founder and co-president of the university's Initiative for Policy Dialogue. He was former chief economist of the World Bank, and he has taught at several top universities, including Princeton, Stanford, and MIT. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2001 for his analyses of markets with asymmetric information.

Development and Environmental Protection on Equal Footing Experts and Scholars Share Their Insights on Environmental issues

The 2014 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition (2014MIECF) have scheduled nine brilliant talks by experts and scholars from around the world, to share their insights on environmental issues. At today´s opening ceremony, Professor Joseph Stiglitz, Recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, Former Chief Economist of the World Bank, Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences of the University of Macau and Professor of the University of Columbia, gave a keynote speech entitled "A Future of Green Growth: Why Sustainability and Equity are Crucial for Saving the Environment". Prof. Stiglitz pointed out, at the beginning of his speech, that due to limited resources on Earth, the lack of these resources will lead to many social problems. In addition, environmental pollution may also have impact on the entire society. For instance, due to the concern on personal health, investors may be deterred from investing in places with bad environmental conditions. Therefore, all countries should aim at preventing the worsening of the pollution problem, so as to reduce its impact on the society and the economy. He pointed out that, after the economic crisis in 2008 in the United States, it has been proved that the incessant pursuit of the GDP growth has not produced a sustainable economy, given that high GDP growth is not a real indicator of the results of a nation´s economic development, but is, on the contrary, a warning that unequal distribution is getting worse. He suggested that countries should abandon their old ways of thinking, by not blindly pursuit GDP growth at the expense of domestic environmental protection. He proposed that, in addition to GDP, all aspects of the integrated indicators, such as employment rate, public health, the environmental situation of the country and the equitable distribution of resources should be taken into consideration, in order to get a true picture of the whole economy, given that, only with positive indicators in all aspects could sustainable economic development be achieved. In the last part of his keynote speech, Prof. Stiglitz stressed that a good environment relies on good government policy. Therefore, he said that the government should play a leading role in establishing green incentives to encourage the green economy, so that enterprises, while concentrating on the development of their business, could also pay attention to the environmental issues. He also recommended that the governments should introduce environmental taxes, under which enterprises are required to pay taxes in the use of certain resources and that the investment taxes received therefrom be used as incentive funds to foster green economy, thus creating a virtuous circle, so that economic development and environmental protection could co-exist. Green Sessions to Explore Business Opportunities in the Environmental Industry After the opening ceremony and keynote speech, the Green Forum was held and focused on issues in relations to Green Transportation, Green Building, Water and Sewage Treatment. Experts and scholars from Australia, European Union, Hong Kong , Japan, Macao, Mainland China, Portugal, Singapore and the United Kingdom were invited to be the speakers. The session on "Retroffiting for Industrial and Commercial Energy Efficiency – The Business Behind the Change" focused on how to reduce energy consumption. With the increasing demand for energy, how to cut costs, improve return on investments and the effective management of production resources have become important issues all over the world. Experts and scholars from Macao, Mainland China, Portugal, Singapore and the United Kingdom conducted in-depth discussion on this issue. At the session entitled "Incentives and Innovation Behind Sustainable Transportation" , guests from the European Union, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Portugal and the United Kingdom explored the topics of innovative transportation systems, traffic development in different regions and shared new concepts and ideas on the developments towards zero-emission green transportation. In his speech, Mr. Vincent Piket, Head of Office of the European Union to Hong Kong and Macao, stressed that, in order to build a green transportation community, it is important to firstly raise public awareness and then, through the enactment of relevant law, achieve the ultimate goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Besides, it is necessary to rely on science and technology innovation, by exploring new technology and new energies to better develop the green economy, he said. At the session on "The Future of Smart Building Design – Optimizing your Investment" , the focus was on the compatible features, technology, aesthetics and cost savings considerations involved in the design of practical buildings, as well as the use of environmentally friendly building materials and efficient maintenance methods. Speakers at this session come from Hong Kong, Macao, Mainland China, Malaysia and Singaporeand to provide references for the development of green construction. Water problem is a matter of global concern. At the "Waste No More – Efficient Way Forward" session, experts and scholars from Australia, Macao, Mainland China, Portugal and Singapore explored how to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of a city´s water supply and sewage treatment systems and shared the advanced waste water treatment technology, commercial water consumption plan and water recycling methods used by different locations, as well as the relationship between water quality and health.
