To promote judicial exchanges and cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, Tong Io Cheng, dean of the Faculty of Law (FLL) at the University of Macau (UM), led a delegation from the Centre for Judicial and Legal Studies of China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries to visit judicial and academic institutions in Portugal and engage in exchanges with Portuguese representatives. All parties agreed that there is ample room for cooperation between China and Portugal in the field of justice and that judicial cooperation between the two sides can be further strengthened by enhancing the exchange of personnel, information sharing, and judicial assistance.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 141 hotel establishments offered accommodation services to the public at the end of the first quarter of 2024, an increase of 15 year-on-year; total number of available guest rooms grew by 19.6% to 47,000. In the first quarter, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms of hotel establishments went up by 9.9 percentage points year-on-year to 84.8%; the rates for 5-star (87.1%), 4-star (81.0%) and 3-star hotels (81.1%) rose by 12.9 percentage points, 8.4 percentage points and 1.7 percentage points respectively.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that external merchandise trade totalled MOP35.89 billion in the first quarter of 2024, down by 7.0% compared to the same period last year (MOP38.60 billion). Total value of merchandise export grew by 4.5% year-on-year to MOP3.29 billion, of which value of domestic exports (MOP334 million) and re-exports (MOP2.96 billion) rose by 7.8% and 4.2% respectively. Total value of merchandise import dropped by 8.1% year-on-year to MOP32.60 billion. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP29.30 billion in the first quarter, a decrease of MOP3.00 billion from the same quarter last year (MOP32.31 billion).
