Stay vigilant to avoid being scammed during the “Singles Day” online shopping festival

The "Singles Day" online shopping festival, which has become an important consumer holiday in Macao, mainland China, and neighboring areas in recent years, is drawing near. During this period in the past, fraudsters frequently posed as platform customer service representatives and called victims, alleging that "the goods they purchased were damaged while being transported" or "the parcel was lost." They claimed they would offer compensation but would require the victims to pay a "security deposit" upfront or click the "refund link" to apply. Indeed, it was a hoax to defraud the victims of their money and personal or bank card information, resulting in losses for the victims.


Demographic statistics for the 3rd quarter of 2023

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population as at end-September 2023 increased by 2,500 quarter-on-quarter to 681,300, mainly attributable to a rise in the number of non-resident workers living in Macao. Women outnumbered men, with the female population (363,500) accounting for 53.4% of the total population.


Mortgage loans statistics – September 2023

According to statistics released today (10 November) by the Monetary Authority of Macao, new approvals of residential mortgage loans (RMLs) and commercial real estate loans (CRELs) both decreased month-on-month in September 2023. With regard to the outstanding balances, RMLs dropped whereas CRELs remained virtually unchanged when compared with the previous month.


Beware of the resurfacing of bogus telecommunications phishing scam

Since the beginning of this month, the Judiciary Police (PJ) has received more than ten reports from residents who alleged to have received fraudulent text messages impersonating a local telecommunications company. The SMS messages claimed that the victims’ loyalty points were about to expire. To redeem their rewards, the recipients of the abovementioned messages should log into a fake website and provide personal and credit card information. Using this method, swindlers stole victims’ information, and the latter incurred a total loss of approximately MOP$130,000.



Students from the Faculty of Languages and Translation of MPU Gained Fruitful Internship Experience at Macao International Trade and Investment Fair

A group of more than twenty undergraduate students from the Faculty of Languages and Translation at the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) completed an internship at the “Macao International Trade and Investment Fair” (MIF) and the “1st China-Portuguese-Speaking Countries Economic and Trade Expo (Macao)” (1st C-PLPEX). The students provided assistance in translation work and business negotiations, allowing them to gain in-depth knowledge of Macao's unique advantages as a trade cooperation platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, as well as to explore future career opportunities.


Cambridge representative visits UM and gives talk on low-carbon buildings

C. Alan Short, president of Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge, led a delegation to visit the University of Macau (UM) today (9 November). The Cambridge delegation had discussions and exchanged views on the Visiting Fellowship Programme with UM. Prof Short also gave a talk titled ‘Low-Carbon Buildings in Continental Climates’ at UM.


Macao Entrepreneur Delegation Bears Fruitful Results at the CIIE in Shanghai

The Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) led a delegationofnearly 50 Macao entrepreneurs to attend the 6th China International Import Expo (CIIE), bearing fruitful results according to its delegates. On the second day of the 6th CIIE, two Macao enterprises signed co-operation agreements with Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs), fullymanifesting Macao’s role as a platform between China and PSCs.


70th Macau Grand Prix Auto Show opens this Friday

The 70th Macau Grand Prix" will be held from the 11th to 12th, and 16th to 19th of this month. To enable residents and visitors to experience the excitement of the Grand Prix ahead, the Macau Grand Prix Organizing Committee (MGPOC) will stage an auto show at Tap Seac Square from this Friday to Sunday (November 10th to 12th), showcasing many of the participating competition vehicles.
