UM holds first workshop for students in EMBA programme

The University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) recently organised the first ‘Study Trip/Group Report Workshop’ for students in its Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) programme. During the workshop, professors from renowned universities were invited to give lectures and share their views on different management topics. Students also joined field trips to well-known enterprises and organisations in Macao and Zhuhai to gain an in-depth understanding of various industries.


Residential property price index for January – March 2022

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the overall residential property price index for January - March 2022 decreased by 1.4% over the previous period (December 2021 - February 2022) to 259.8. The indices for the Macao Peninsula (261.0) and Taipa & Coloane (254.9) dropped by 0.9% and 3.3% respectively.


Payment Card and Mobile Payment Statistics – 1st Quarter 2022

According to statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, the total number of personal credit cards and debit cards issued by banks in Macao increased in the first quarter of 2022. The credit card turnover witnessed quarter-to-quarter growth, whereas the debit card turnover recorded a decline. On the other hand, the number and the value of transactions of local mobile payment tools continued to rise on a quarterly basis.


Tourism fares well over the Mainland’s Labor Day Holidays Positive growth in visitor arrivals and hotel occupancy rates

Spanning five days (30 April -- 4 May 2022), the 1st May Labor Day Holidays has drawn to a close in Mainland China. Preliminary statistics revealed a cumulative volume of 137,000 visitor arrivals in Macao over the period while the average occupancy rate of local hotels reached 59.5%. The single-day record of inbound visitors peaked at about 42,000 on 30 April, an all-time high in 2022.


UM sweeps top 3 prizes at Bank of China Trophy One Million Dollar Macao Regional Entrepreneurship Competition

Two teams formed by University of Macau (UM) professors, namely ‘UM SupraScience’ and ‘Macau Smart City Terahertz Light Quantum Energy Saver Equipment Project’, and a team formed by UM students, namely ‘FinTech Plus’, recently won a first prize, a second prize, and a third prize, respectively, at the 2022 Bank of China Trophy One Million Dollar Macao Regional Entrepreneurship Competition. The winning teams will represent Macao in the grand final of the One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition.



Company statistics for the 1st quarter of 2022

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 1,095 new companies were incorporated in the first quarter of 2022, a decrease of 422 year-on-year. Number of new companies operating in Wholesale & Retail Trade (375) and Business Services (279) went down by 143 and 127 respectively. Meanwhile, total value of registered capital of the new companies soared by 6,063.3% year-on-year to MOP13.51 billion, attributable to the incorporation of new companies with large capital in Financial Activities during the quarter. Companies in dissolution totalled 208 in the first quarter, and the value of registered capital of these companies amounted to MOP49 million.


Chinese literary works translated by UM professors and students published in Brazil

Faculty members and students in the Department of Portuguese, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Macau (UM), have worked together to translate the Chinese literary classic Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio and the poetry collection I Don't Believe in the Echo of Thunder into Portuguese. The two books have been published in Brazil alongside Beyond the Mountain (Portuguese title O Além da Montanha), a Portuguese prose collection by Yao Jingming, professor in the same department (known by his pseudonym Yao Feng), through the publishing house Moinhos.


CATTI test is now open for registration at MPU

The China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI) is a state-level translation professional qualification certification implemented in China for the general public. It sets out to evaluate the bilingual competence and proficiency of the candidates in interpretation and translation. It is the only language-related test included in China's national vocational qualification system. Its translation qualification certificate is jointly issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of China and the China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration. It is widely recognized in the job market and has become the most popular certification among industry professionals and college students majoring in translation and interpreting studies. CATTI tests 2022 will be held at Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) form June 18-19, 2022.


Macao’s Base Rate of the Discount Window Raised to 1.25%

The Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) raised the Base Rate of the Discount Window today (5 May 2022) by 50 basis points to 1.25%.
