The Public Art Exhibition of “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021”, themed “Technology of Well-being”, aims to encourage people to explore the meaning of happiness. Several distinctive artworks are exhibited in public spaces of the city, in combination with other sections of “Art Macao” to bring an immersive cultural atmosphere to the entire city as a gallery and an art garden. The public artwork “Gathering” is now on display in the Art Plaza of the Macao Cultural Centre, where the public can navigate between the adjacent mega panorama “Learning from Macao” and the Main Exhibition at the Macao Museum of Art in an art tour destination in the coming autumn.

A book titled ‘How COVID-19 Reshapes New World Order: Political Economy Perspective’, written by Prof Edmund Sheng Li in the Faculty of Social Science (FSS), University of Macau (UM), has been published by the major international publisher Springer. The book is one of the first monographs on COVID-19 from the perspective of political economy and the first English monograph in the Greater China region on this topic. It is a comprehensive study with significant academic and policy value.

A research team in the University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), led by FHS Associate Professor Zhao Qi, has developed a new nanozyme technology that can enhance the anti-tumour effects of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells by reshaping the tumour microenvironment. This technology can be used to improve the ability of the patient’s own immune system to fight the tumour. The study has been published in the high-impact academic journal Small.

Data collection for the 2021 Population Census has been successfully concluded. In appreciation for the support and cooperation from households, households who completed the Census questionnaire between 7 and 21 August will be automatically entered into the Early Census Response for Greater Chance of Winning Lucky Draw. The grand prize draw took place today (31 Aug), and Director Ieong Meng Chao, Deputy Director Cheng I Wan and Deputy Director Mak Hang Chan of the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) drew a total of 15 winning households. Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 245,414 as at end-July 2021, up by 1.9% year-on-year. Light automobiles (112,294) and heavy motorcycles (104,215) went up by 2.2% and 3.5% year-on-year respectively. Meanwhile, new registration of motor vehicles in July dropped by 17.1% year-on-year to 1,053, with that of heavy motorcycles (573) falling by 24.2%. From January to July 2021, new registration of motor vehicles increased by 15.0% year-on-year to 7,550. Number of traffic accidents in July went up by 41.2% year-on-year to 1,254, with one person killed and 430 persons injured. In the first seven months of 2021, there were a total of 7,520 traffic accidents, which resulted in one death and 2,576 injuries.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export amounted to MOP1.12 billion in July 2021, up by 5.2% year-on-year. Value of re-exports (MOP943 million) grew by 3.7%, with that of Machines, apparatus & parts and Watches rising by 67.4% and 20.7% respectively. Moreover, value of domestic exports (MOP176 million) rose by 13.6%, with that of Bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits & other bakers’ wares and Copper & articles thereof surging by 180.4% and 60.0% respectively. Total merchandise import soared by 111.7% year-on-year to MOP15.39 billion, of which imports of Mobile phones, Gold jewellery, Watches and Handbags & wallets swelled by 653.8%, 536.6%, 311.0% and 247.9% respectively; in contrast, imports of Other textile made-up articles and Articles for casino declined by 48.2% and 34.8% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit in July 2021 totalled MOP14.27 billion.
