UM holds UAUC joint meeting; Ho Iat Seng: HE institutions should strive to turn technological progress into productivity growth
The University of Macau (UM) held the Joint Meeting of the University Assembly (UA) and University Council (UC) for the 2019/2020 academic year on 21 July in its Ho Yin Conference Hall. Ho Iat Seng, chief executive of the Macao SAR, chancellor of UM, and chair of the UA, presided over the meeting. Ho stressed that it is the responsibility of local higher education institutions to promote technological innovation, transfer of research results, and diversification of Macao’s economy. He added that as a leading HE institution in Macao, UM should strive to translate technological progress into productivity growth.

UM, HKBU successfully develop new probe to integrate cancer diagnosis and treatment
The novel theranostic agent has the potential for monitoring and evaluating the progress of cancer therapy in real time. A research team led by Prof Leung Chung Hang in the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS), University of Macau (UM), and another research team led by Prof Ma Dik Lung in the Department of Chemistry, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), have successfully synthesised a new gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPr)-based probe to integrate cancer treatment and diagnosis. The probe can selectively visualise GRPr in living cancer cells while modulating the function of GRPr in immune cells, which will help to accurately identify tumours and their biological characteristics. The study has been published in the internationally renowned journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition.

Visitor Arrivals for June 2020
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that there were 22,556 visitor arrivals in June 2020, a decline of more than 90% year-on-year. Same-day visitors and overnight visitors totalled 13,205 and 9,351 respectively. The average length of stay of visitors extended by 0.2 day year-on-year to 1.4 days; the duration for overnight visitors (5.6 days) increased by 3.4 days, whereas that for same-day visitors (0.1 day) went down by 0.1 day. In addition, as the proportion of same-day visitors (58.5%) surged by 15.0 percentage points compared to May, the average length of stay of visitors shortened by 3.9 days month-to-month.
