Package tours and hotel occupancy rate for April 2020
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 110 hotels & guesthouses were open for business in April 2020, and number of available guest rooms decreased by 12.3% year-on-year to 34,000. Data on hotels & guesthouses used for medical observation were excluded in the compilation of the following statistics. With a continued decline in number of overnight visitors in April following the tightened quarantine measures for arrivals in late March, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms fell by 78.6 percentage points year-on-year to 12.9%. The rate of 5-star hotels (6.6%) reduced by 85.9 percentage points, while the rates of 2-star hotels (37.4%) and guesthouses (36.3%) dropped by 40.1 percentage points and 28.5 percentage points respectively.

Announcement of the 38th Macao Young Musicians Competition Schedule
Organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the 38th Macao Young Musicians Competition, dedicated to the category of Chinese and Western Instruments and Vocal Music, will start on 15 August this year. The University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) and the Bank of China Macau Branch recently held the second series of Online Workshop for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), titled ‘Online Operations for SMEs and Electronic Payments’. Participants say that the workshop has allowed them to gain a better understanding of digital marketing in Macao, which has in turn boosted their confidence about expanding their businesses on the internet.

The Joint Graduation Exhibition 2020 – “Revolving” held by the School of Arts of Macao Polytechnic Institute will be launched online starting from May 29th, 2020 on the online platforms of Facebook and Behance. Graduation works from over 80 graduates of the Bachelor of Arts in Design and the Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art will be shown. UM-developed biomimetic nanomedicine helps effectively treat atherosclerosis
Nature Communications today (26 May) published a study from the University of Macau (UM) on the development of a biomimetic drug delivery system derived from macrophage-membrane coated reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive nanoparticles, which can effectively treat atherosclerosis without causing toxic side effects. This is also the first study in the field that compares a biomimetic nanomedicine with a live-cell-based drug delivery system in an inflammatory disease model, which can provide guidance for researchers to choose the appropriate formulation in future research.

Four categories of people added to Macao’s nucleic acid testing scheme
The scope of Macao’s standard scheme enabling human nucleic acid testing regarding COVID-19 infection has been extended – since Monday (25 May) – to Macao residents aged either 65 or above, and those aged either 18 or under.

UM Master of Science in Accounting programme receives maximum exam exemptions from ACCA
The Master of Science in Accounting programme, offered by the Department of Accounting and Information Management, Faculty of Business Administration (FBA), University of Macau (UM), has been fully accredited by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in the recent re-accreditation. Students enrolled in the programme are entitled to a maximum of nine exam exemptions with the ACCA. This accreditation makes FBA's Master of Science in Accounting programme one of the programmes in the Greater Bay Area to receive the maximum number of exam exemptions from the ACCA.

Results of retail sales survey for the 1st quarter of 2020
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that value of retail sales for the first quarter of 2020 fell by 45.1% year-on-year to MOP11.24 billion amid the epidemic, and the sales volume index dropped by 44.8%.

Schools’ Overall Operation after Class Resumption for P4 to P6 Is Smooth
Around 16,000 Primary 4 to 6 students from 59 schools in Macao returned to school to resume classes on 25th May. The related schools had followed the Guidelines for Class Resumption issued by the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (hereinafter referred to as the “DSEJ”) to disinfect the school campus and strengthen their hygiene measures, as well as conduct a drill on class resumption. All school staff and cross-border students had passed their nucleic acid tests as well.
