External merchandise trade statistics for March 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export for March 2017 amounted to MOP1.07 billion, up by 4.8% year-on-year; value of re-exports (MOP912 million) increased by 5.2%, with that of Wine (MOP51 million) surging by 341.4%; meanwhile, value of domestic exports (MOP155 million) grew by 2.6%, with that of Glass & glassware (MOP16 million) rising by 27.0%. Total merchandise import grew by 19.0% year-on-year to MOP6.41 billion, of which imports of Watches and Gold jewellery expanded by 64.8% and 47.1% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit amounted to MOP5.35 billion.


The 2017 Traditional Medicine International Development Forum hosted in Bangkok Thailand Aspiring to Build a Sino-ASEAN Traditional Medicine Industry Exchange and Cooperation Platform

The Guangdong-Macao Traditional Chinese Medicine Technology Industrial Park (GMTCM Park), in conjunction with Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health (MOPH), Department for Development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM) and Naresuan University in Thailand, officially opened the 2017 Traditional Medicine International Development Forum in Bangkok, Thailand today (27 April 2017). The Forum convened representatives of Traditional Medicine from government departments, organizations, associations and enterprises of Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia, in addition to other ASEAN Member States, mainland China and the Macao SAR Government, attracting a turnout of nearly 200 professionals.


Electoral Affairs Commission to make more public spaces available for campaigning

The Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election plans to make available 24 outdoor public spaces where the campaign teams of the candidates can present their respective manifestos to the public.

The entrepreneurship course led by Dr. Fernando Lourenço of the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT) are delighted to have Deputy Director, Mr. Lau Wai Meng, the Direcção dos Serviços de Economia – Macao Economic Services (MES) to offer a talk on the role of the Department in stimulating entrepreneurship in Macao. Via this talk, Deputy Director Lau offers students important information regarding the Young Entrepreneurs Aid Scheme, SME Credit Guarantee Scheme, Business Incubator Centre for Young People, and many other services and policies aiming to help young entrepreneurs and their entrepreneurial career.


Joint boundary clearance system by year end at HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge

The Government anticipates a joint boundary clearance system – for people travelling between Macao and Zhuhai via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge – will be in place by year end, coinciding with the expected launch of the facility.


Employment survey for January-March 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the general unemployment rate for January-March 2017 was 2.0%, and the unemployment rate of local residents was 2.8%; meanwhile, the underemployment rate stood at 0.5%. All three indicators held stable as in the previous period (December 2016-February 2017).


MGTO welcomes Labor Day holidays with a range of measures

As the 1stMay Labor Day holidays (29th April – 1st May) approaches in the Mainland, Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) actively gets prepared with a variety of measures adopted as follows: more scrupulous inspections, sending reminders to local businesses via letter, food guide publication, attending to enquiries at different stationed locations and supporting entities in organizing festive and holiday activities, etc. The above measures aim to cater to local residents and visitors with regard to their needs, and keep optimizing the tourism environment and safeguarding service quality in the local industry.

MGTO regularly publicizes the room rates declared by local hotels and guest houses in different room categories on its website, and via its WeChat ID, advises visitors to arrange their accommodation and itinerary in advance prior to their trip.


Macao and Gansu sign consumer protection protocol to encourage good consumption environment and economic development

Macao Consumer Council and Gansu Consumers Association sign a consumer protection protocol in Macao today (26thApril) to establish a mechanism for case transfer, information exchange, and other co-operation, etc.. The Council indicates that it has been trying to further its co-operation with provinces and cities included in the One Belt, One Road region, both the Council and Gansu Consumers Association agree that co-operation between the two parties will help establish a healthy consumption environment and thus encourage economic development.


2017 Macao International Museum Day Carnival opens in May revealing the fusion between museums and local festivities

In response to this year’s International Museum Day, 17 Macao museums co-organize a large-scale annual museum event, the “2017 Macao International Museum Day Carnival” themed “The Mobile Museum – Red MarketX Drunken Dragon Festival”. The opening ceremony will be held on 3 May, at 10:30am, at the Red Market (Mercado Municipal Almirante Lacerda). Representatives of cultural entities from Guangdong Province and of the Hong Kong Home Affairs Bureau and its respective museums were invited to participate in the ceremony. The general public is welcome to attend the ceremony.


UM Honorary Doctor Carl Edwin Wieman gives talk on science education

Carl Edwin Wieman, the new honorary doctor of the University of Macau (UM) and a Nobel laureate in physics, today (25 April) gave a Doctor honoris causa Lecture, titled ‘Taking a Scientific Approach to Science Education’, in the auditorium of UM Wu Yee Sun Library.
