Temporary Residency Applications Handled in 2024

In 2024, the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute has handled 115 temporary residency applications for "Investors, Managerial Personnel and Professionals with Special Qualifications". Among them, there were 66 renewal applications, 5 applications for residency extension to family dependent, and 44 new applications. 12 new applications were approved in 2024. Transport and communications statistics for the whole year and December of 2024

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 253,182 as at end-2024, up by 0.5% year-on-year. For the whole year of 2024, cross-border vehicular traffic (9,194,986 trips), passenger ferry trips (79,599 trips) and arriving and departing commercial flights at the Macau International Airport (56,595 trips) rose by 25.8%, 17.5% and 44.4% year-on-year respectively. As at end-2024, number of mobile phone subscribers (1,448,713) and internet subscribers (774,678) showed respective growth of 5.4% and 7.4% year-on-year.


External merchandise trade statistics for the whole year and December of 2024

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that external merchandise trade totalled MOP142.15 billion in 2024, down by 8.2% from MOP154.78 billion in 2023. In 2024, total value of merchandise exports rose by 1.1% year-on-year to MOP13.49 billion, of which value of re-exports (MOP12.00 billion) increased by 1.8% while value of domestic exports (MOP1.49 billion) decreased by 4.0%. Total value of merchandise imports dropped by 9.0% year-on-year to MOP128.67 billion. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP115.18 billion in 2024, down by MOP12.93 billion from MOP128.11 billion in 2023.


“Shining Art – Gold and Silver Handicraft Exhibition of Hebei and Guizhou Provinces” inaugurated at Tap Seac Gallery

Organised by the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, the Hebei Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and the Guizhou Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, coordinated by the Center for Ethnic and Folk Literature and Art Development of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and co-organised by the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, the exhibition “Shining Art - Gold and Silver Handicraft Exhibition of Hebei and Guizhou Provinces” was inaugurated on 24 January, at the Tap Seac Gallery. The opening ceremony was officiated by the Deputy Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, Bai Bing; the Acting Vice President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, Choi Kin Long; the 2nd Class Inspector of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Hebei Province, Li Wenyuan; the Member of the Leading Group of the Communist Party of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guizhou Province and the Director of the Provincial Cultural Relics Development Centre, Zhang Yong; the Deputy Director of the Center for Ethnic and Folk Literature and Art Development of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China, Zhou Rui; and the Member of the Executive Committee of Teledifusão de Macau, S.A., Cheang Kong Pou.


Public Library of the Cultural Affairs Bureau suspends some services temporarily due to an information system upgrade

In order to ensure the proper operation of the information system and to further optimise the quality of library services, the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) will carry out an information system upgrade of the Public Library from 8pm on 28 January (Chinese New Year Eve) to 11:59pm on 31 January 2025 (third day of the Chinese New Year). During this period, a number of library services will be suspended or affected, including the library catalogue search system and the electronic resource service on the Public Library’s website, the mobile application “My Library”, multi-functional self-service, as well as the services provided by the Public Library in the “Macao One Account”. In addition, the circulation services of the Red Market Library and the 24-hour book drops of all branch libraries will also be temporarily suspended in the abovementioned period. The public is advised to pay attention and make arrangements in advance.


MGTO showcases Macao at FITUR unveiling this year’s stronger promotional focus in Europe

The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) expanded the promotion at this year’s FITUR, one of the world’s biggest international tourism trade fairs, running from January 22 until 26 in Madrid, Spain. During and beyond the event, MGTO is also launching a string of initiatives targeting the European travel trade and consumers as part of the stronger efforts in 2025 to boost visitor arrivals from long-haul markets to Macao.


MPU’s “Constitution and Basic Law on Campus” Lecture Series Achieves Remarkable Results

In order deepen national consciousness, patriotism and the legal awareness of local secondary students, the “One Country Two Systems” Research Centre of Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) has been holding the series of lectures on “Constitution and Basic Law on Campus” in local secondary schools for 5 consecutive years. Recently, the lecture series, with topics on the Constitution, the Macau Basic Law and the Macao National Security Law, has been held in over 30 secondary schools with audiences of about 9000, and has received great responses.


Consumer price index (CPI) for December and the whole year of 2024

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the inflation rate for 2024 was 0.74%, down by 0.2 percentage points from 0.94% in 2023. The Composite CPI for December grew by 0.23% year-on-year and 0.2% month-on-month. The average CPI-A and CPI-B rose by 0.7% and 0.79% year-on-year respectively in 2024.


Employment survey for the whole year of 2024 and the 4th quarter of 2024

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that, following the stable economic recovery in 2024, the general unemployment rate and the unemployment rate of local residents for the whole year decreased by 0.9 and 1.0 percentage points year-on-year to 1.8% and 2.4% respectively. Median monthly employment earnings of the employed population and the employed residents were MOP18,000 and MOP20,500 respectively, both up by MOP500 year-on-year.


MPU Holds the Summer Programme Fair 2025

Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) is committed to cultivating outstanding talents with an international perspective and continuously provides students with opportunities for exchanges and studies abroad, while strengthening the connection between Macao and international universities in the field of higher education. The Student Affairs Office of MPU held the 2025 Summer Programme Fair, inviting 11 higher education institutions from around the world to introduce their 2025 summer programmes, attracting about 2,200 participants and creating a lively atmosphere at the venue.
