The Ministry of Education Frontiers Science Center for Precision Oncology (FSCPO) of the University of Macau (UM) held its first Academic Committee meeting. A number of academicians and research experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the US National Academy of Sciences and other prestigious institutions listened to FSCPO’s reports and offered advice to the centre. In addition, during the meeting with UM Rector Yonghua Song, members of the Academic Committee highly praised FSCPO for its outstanding achievements. They emphasised the remarkable and groundbreaking progress the centre has made in cancer research, and its ability to produce high-quality research within just over two years since its establishment.

The University of Macau (UM) held a Doctor honoris causa Lecture today (19 December). Dennis Lo Yuk Ming, honorary doctor of UM, gave a talk titled ‘Pushing Forward the Frontiers of Prenatal and Cancer Liquid Biopsies’ to discuss the current and future developments of the field of liquid biopsy. The event attracted many experts, scholars, industry practitioners, researchers, as well as UM faculty members and students.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that receipts of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments went up by 35.7% year-on-year in October 2023; receipts of Western Restaurants and Chinese Restaurants grew by 69.7% and 52.1% respectively, whereas those of Japanese & Korean Restaurants dropped by 24.9%. Meanwhile, sales of the interviewed retailers rose by 38.4% year-on-year in October, with relatively large growth in the sales of Department Stores (+58.5%), Watches, Clocks & Jewellery (+52.1%), Leather Goods (+51.3%) and Adults' Clothing Retailers (+43.7%).

The concert “Makoto Ozone with Macao Orchestra”, integrated in the Macao Orchestra Concert Season, will be held on 23 December 2023 (Saturday), at 8pm, at the Galaxy Auditorium of the Galaxy International Convention Center. Under the baton of Music Director of the Macao Orchestra, Lio Kuokman, the internationally acclaimed jazz superstar Makoto Ozone will collaborate with bassist Shimpei Ogawa and drummer Kunito Kitai to take music aficionados into a world of classical music and jazz, celebrating a wonderful Christmas with the public. The concert is presented by Galaxy Entertainment Group and tickets are now on sale at the Macau Ticketing Network.

The Government has today announced the list of Decorations, Medals, and Certificates of Merit awarded for 2023 by the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR). There are 28 recipients, either individuals or organisations, in recognition of respectively, achievement, outstanding contribution, and distinguished service.

To strengthen the cooperation of higher education between Macao and Portugal, the Teaching and Learning Centre of Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) held a higher education quality assurance workshop on 13^th Dec 2023. Prof. João António de Sampaio Rodrigues Queiroz, the executive member of the management board of the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES), was invited to lecture on “Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation system in Portugal”. He presented information on higher education quality assurance in Portugal, engaged in productive exchanges of views and discussions with the participants, and received positive feedback from all the teachers.
