Rental statistics for the second quarter of 2025
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the average rent per square metre of usable area for shops was MOP481 in the second quarter of 2025, down by 0.8% quarter-on-quarter. The average rents for office units (MOP286) and industrial units (MOP123) went down by 1.3% and 0.1% respectively, while the average rent for residential units (MOP139) increased slightly by 0.2%.

Ophthalmology Department of Macao Union Medical Center launches routine ambulatory cataract surgery
Macao’s population shows an increasingly evident ageing trend. Many people in their 60s begin to notice a marked decline in vision, seeing things as if “through a mist.” After consulting ophthalmology specialists, they are diagnosed with senile cataract and require surgical treatment. To address this public health need, under the coordination of the Health Bureau of the Macao SAR, the Ophthalmology Department of the Islands Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Center of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (hereinafter referred to as “Macao Union Medical Center”) has been working closely with the Ophthalmology Department of Conde de São Januário General Hospital. Since mid-July this year, three lead surgeons from both hospitals have been performing routine cataract surgeries at the Macao Union Medical Center on a daily basis. To date, more than one hundred cataract patients have undergone surgery and regained their sight.

Mobile payment and payment card statistics – 2nd Quarter 2025
According to statistics released today (15 August) by the Monetary Authority of Macao, in the second quarter of 2025, the number and the value of transactions of local mobile payment tools both witnessed growth on a quarterly basis. On the other hand, the credit card and the debit card turnover both decreased from the preceding quarter.

Mortgage loans statistics – June 2025
According to statistics released today (15 August) by the Monetary Authority of Macao, new approvals of residential mortgage loans (RMLs) and commercial real estate loans (CRELs) both increased month-on-month in June 2025. With regard to the outstanding balances, both RMLs and CRELs witnessed declines on a monthly basis.

Foreign exchange reserves and nominal effective exchange rate index for the pataca – July 2025
The Monetary Authority of Macao announced today (15 August) that the preliminary estimate of Macao SAR’s foreign exchange reserves amounted to MOP233.7 billion (USD28.91 billion) at the end of July 2025. The reserves decreased by 1.0% from the revised value of MOP236.1 billion (USD29.20 billion) for the previous month. Macao SAR’s foreign exchange reserves at end-July 2025 represented 11 times the currency in circulation or 88.4% of pataca M2 at end-June 2025.

The Chief Executive, Mr Sam Hou Fai, will – from 16 to 20 August – lead a Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Government delegation on visits to respectively, Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province, Shanghai Municipality, and Nanjing in Jiangsu Province.

UM organises orientation activities to help new students settle into university life
As the new academic year starts, the University of Macau (UM) has organised a series of ‘The Way to UM’ orientation activities for new students. The activities aim to provide new students with information about the university, help them adapt to university life, facilitate communication among peers, and strengthen communication and collaboration between parents and the university. UM Rector Yonghua Song, Vice Rector Mok Kai Meng, and Dean of Students Paul Pang visited each residential college and joined the college masters in welcoming new students and their parents. They also and oversaw the move-in arrangements to better understand the needs of the new students.
