GIF presented ML-related risk assessment to the accounting professional
In order to continue enhancing the professional knowledge of Macao’s accounting sector in the field of anti-money laundering/combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT), the Director of the Financial Intelligence Office (GIF) was invited by the Professional Committee of Accountants of Macao and the Macau Institute of Management as the keynote speaker at the course “Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Risk Assessment in the Accounting Sector” on 22nd September 2023.

Transport and communications statistics for August 2023
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 250,596 as at end-August 2023, up by 1.2% year-on-year; light automobiles (115,090) and heavy motorcycles (109,053) rose by 1.5% and 2.0% respectively. New registration of motor vehicles in August went up by 3.6% year-on-year to 1,062 (220 were electric vehicles); of which, light automobiles increased by 34.7% to 532 (130 of them were electric), whereas heavy motorcycles dropped by 23.7% to 463 (53 of them were electric). From January to August 2023, new registration of motor vehicles grew by 27.4% year-on-year to 7,944. Number of traffic accidents in August climbed by 25.0% year-on-year to 1,139, with 402 persons injured. In the first eight months of 2023, there were 8,748 traffic accidents, which resulted in 5 deaths and 3,047 injuries.

UM students’ research on hyperthermia wins best paper award at international conference
Lam Lam and Song Naihe, recent graduates in the Department of Electromechanical Engineering (EME) of the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM), presented their research on hyperthermia applications at the 7th International Workshop on Heat-Mass Transfer Advances for Energy Conservation and Pollution Control (IWHT 2023). The study provides a basis for the amount of heat required by microrobots to generate hyperthermia in blood vessels. It was well received by the judges and won the best paper award.

Package tours and hotel occupancy rate for August 2023
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 136 hotel establishments offered accommodation services to the public in August 2023, an increase of 16 year-on-year. Total number of available guest rooms grew by 20.0% to 45,000. The average occupancy rate of guest rooms in August hiked by 53.8 percentage points year-on-year to 88.7%; 5-star hotels had the highest occupancy rate of 90.9%, which represented a rise of 59.0 percentage points year-on-year, and the rates for 2-star (89.5%) and 4-star hotels (88.1%) surged by 42.4 percentage points and 49.3 percentage points respectively.

Results of industrial survey 2022
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that there were 889 establishments operating in industrial related activities in Macao (covering Manufacturing and Electricity, Gas & Water Supply) in 2022, the same as in 2021. Total number of persons engaged dropped by 204 to 10,579. Receipts and Expenditure of these establishments amounted to MOP10.53 billion and MOP7.74 billion respectively in 2022, up by 1.3% and 2.5% year-on-year. As expenditure showed a higher increase than receipts, Gross Surplus decreased by 1.8% year-on-year to MOP2.80 billion. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy went down by 1.6% to MOP4.85 billion, and Gross Fixed Capital Formation declined by 74.5% to MOP310 million.
