Transport and communications statistics for May 2024
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 250,597 as at end-May 2024, up by 0.5% year-on-year, with light automobiles (116,842) rising by 2.3%. New registration of motor vehicles in May went up by 2.4% year-on-year to 1,057 (including 319 electric vehicles); of which, light automobiles increased by 34.7% to 633 (146 of them were electric), whereas heavy motorcycles dropped by 24.9% to 361 (116 of them were electric). In the first five months of 2024, new registration of motor vehicles grew by 2.4% year-on-year to 5,079 (1,552 of them were electric). Number of traffic accidents in May climbed by 48.9% year-on-year to 1,404, with 514 persons injured. In the first five months of 2024, there were 6,409 traffic accidents, which resulted in 2 deaths and 2,331 injuries.

MSAR Government thanks Central Government for increasing mainland residents’ duty-free allowance for luggage items when returning from visits to Macao
The Chief Executive, Mr Ho Iat Seng, expressed today heartfelt gratitude to the Central Government – on behalf of the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Government – for once again introducing measures to benefit Macao. The mainland has increased the duty-free allowance for luggage items brought by mainland residents when returning from visits to Macao. This measure will help drive consumption in Macao’s tourism market and help small and medium-sized enterprises in Macao, injecting new impetus into the overall economic development of the MSAR.

IAM organises roving exhibition on “Taking a Walk through the Streets of Macao – Knowing about Macao 2024”
To deepen the public and youth’s knowledge about the Macao community and strengthen their sense of belonging towards Macao, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) will organise a roving exhibition on “Taking a Walk through the Streets of Macao – Knowing about Macao 2024” for schools, associations and organisations from August to December 2024. A quiz game with prizes will also be launched with the exhibition. IAM has begun receiving applications for the activity and the public are welcome to take part in it.

IAM continues to promote points to note for transition period of “Law on Veterinary Clinical Care and Commercial Activity of Animals”
The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) continues to explain the points to note for transition period of the “Law on Veterinary Clinical Care and Commercial Activity of Animals” to members of the sector. The transition period for relevant certification of professional accreditation of individuals who had engaged in the veterinary profession in Macao before the law came into effect will end this month, after which they will be required to submit registration applications to IAM in accordance with the law before they can continue to exercise the profession. Meanwhile, through talks organised with other departments on licenses for establishments of veterinary clinical care activities and establishments of commercial activity of animals and with the aim of promoting the sound development of the sector and ensuring an orderly transition to the new law, IAM has explained the requirements for installation of establishments, licensing process and the regime of temporary license during the transition period to members of the construction sector to deepen their understanding of the standards of the new law and to assist persons in charge of the establishments in carrying out relevant construction projects when needed.

Faculty and Students of MPU Achieve Excellent Results at the 7th National University Students Arts Showcase
The 7th National University Students Arts Showcase took place in Xiangyang, Hubei Province. The Faculty of Arts and Design of Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) submitted three projects for the showcase, all of which received awards. This success highlights the accomplishments of the Visual Arts Programme of MPU in promoting the integration of science and arts and cultivating diverse talents.

IAM and Health Bureau promote “Safe Food” and “Restaurante─Alimentação Saudável” schemes to the sector
In order to increase the motivation of people in charge of food and beverage establishments to ensure food safety and to encourage food and beverage businesses to create environments that support healthy eating, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) and the Health Bureau recently gave a briefing about the “Safe Food—Incentive Scheme for Hygiene Self-Inspection” and the “Restaurant─Alimentação Saudável” (“Restaurant─Healthy Eating”) scheme to representatives of the food and beverage sector.

With fully electronic applications for License for Food and Beverage Establishments, IAM holds explanatory session to facilitate the sector’s understanding of application procedures
The reform regime of the “One-stop Licensing Procedures for Food and Beverage Establishments” has entered into force since 25 January this year. Applicants can make applications for the license in a fully electronic manner via the Business & Associations Platform to raise the licensing efficiency and reduce the costs for business commencement. The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) continuously maintains communication with the sector through various channels to allow them to gain a deeper understanding of the licensing regime after the reform, the application procedures and the issues for attention. IAM recently held an explanatory session on electronic application for License for Food and Beverage Establishments, which was attended by close to 60 representatives of the sector.

UM rector attends AULP annual meeting in Brazil
To deepen exchanges and cooperation with higher education institutions in Portuguese-speaking countries, Rector Yonghua Song and Vice Rector Rui Martins of the University of Macau (UM) led a delegation to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 33rd annual meeting of the Association of Portuguese Speaking Universities (AULP). They also visited renowned universities and educational institutions and established a number of collaborative projects.
