Consumer price index (CPI) for April 2023

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the Composite CPI for April 2023 (104.43) grew by 0.85% year-on-year. The increment was attributed to dearer charges for eating out, rising tuition fees and wages of domestic helpers, as well as higher hotel room rates and prices of fruits and gasoline; yet, the rise was partially offset by lower rentals for dwellings and reduced airfares. Among the various sections of goods and services, price indices of Education and Household Furnishings & Services rose by 9.99% and 4.68% year-on-year respectively, whereas the index of Housing & Fuels dropped by 1.97%. The CPI-A (103.94) and CPI-B (105.08) saw respective growth of 0.60% and 1.17% year-on-year.


Business climate survey on restaurants & similar establishments and retail trade for March 2023

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that receipts of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments rose by 54.7% year-on-year in March 2023. All types of interviewed establishments registered a year-on-year rise in receipts, with Western Restaurants recording a notable growth of 125.7% and Chinese Restaurants posting an increase of 79.7%. In addition, sales of the interviewed retailers grew by 54.3% year-on-year in March. Sales of Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers surged by 116.3%, and sales of Adults' Clothing Retailers and Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers swelled by 80.2% and 75.3% respectively; meanwhile, Motor Vehicle Retailers saw a 10.3% decrease in sales.


Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows temporarily closed to the public from 20 to 22 May

Due to inspection works, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), and parts of its surrounding areas, will be temporarily closed to the public from 20 to 22 May. During this period, the Guia Fortress will remain open to the public.


IAM clears and maintains sewers continuously before typhoon and rainy season to reduce the risk of flooding

As the typhoon and rainy season is approaching, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) clears and maintains sewers continuously in various districts with a focus on stepping up inspections in areas susceptible to floods. The silt clearing work in multiple low-lying areas has been completed, and a total of over 200 tonnes of waste has been removed from public drains. IAM also continues to step up inspections of construction sites and food establishments and initiates prosecutions against violations of regulations. IAM appeals to the society to jointly protect the drainage networks to safeguard the normal operation of the drains.


IAM carries out tree protection work in an orderly manner before typhoon season

As the typhoon and rainy season is approaching, the tree maintenance personnel of the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) continue to inspect the trees in various districts in Macao in order to protect local greening environment and safeguard public safety. With regard to trees in bad health conditions and with structural defects, pruning and maintenance have been carried out and re-inspections of the trees have been arranged.

“The Scent of Lotus Perfumes the City of Macao - the 23rd Macao Lotus Flower Festival” organised by the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) will be held between 9 and 18 June, during which potted lotus flowers will be placed across Macao besides the main exhibition venue in Avenida da Praia, Taipa, delighting visitors with the beauty of lotus blooms. Meanwhile, a series of exhibitions and activities with rich content will be arranged for visitors to enjoy both physical and sedentary activities. The public are welcome to participate.

IAM organises a series of activities for World Food Safety Day to facilitate government-community cooperation in safeguarding food safety

The World Food Safety Day falls on 7 June annually and this year’s theme is “Food Standards Save Lives”. The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) will organise a series of food safety activities in response to the theme to help the food sector and the public establish a scientific and rational outlook on food safety and implement it in food production and daily life, so as to improve their ability to prevent food safety risks for safeguarding food safety together.


Exchange for the Tiger and Rabbit Zodiac banknotes and the XXIV Olympic Winter Games banknotes commencing next Monday (22 May)

The online registration process for the exchange of the Tiger and Rabbit Zodiac banknotes and the XXIV Olympic Winter Games banknotes has already been completed successfully. Starting from next Monday (22 May), all participating banks will conduct the exchange with registrants for the mentioned banknotes.


[New Impetus for Macao-Hengqin Synergistic Development] Economic and Trade Co-operation Promotion between Macao-Hengqin and Europe

In the wake of the Macao SAR government’s visit to the three European countries in April, it has received several return visits from European enterprises. Closer interaction between Macao-Hengqin and Europe will boost Macao’s external exchanges, further leveraging its role as a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs), adding great impetus into the synergistic development of Macao and the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Co-operation Zone in Hengqin (the Co-operation Zone), for the purpose of promoting Macao’s appropriate economic diversification.
