Chinese Academy of Sciences member Mei Hong gives talk at UM on artificial collective intelligence

The University of Macau (UM) today (17 November) held a talk titled ‘Constructing Artificial Collective Intelligence’ as part of the University Lecture Series. Mei Hong, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was the guest speaker. During the talk, he discussed the latest progress in the research of collective intelligence and its application. Combining both virtual and in-person elements, the talk attracted many UM faculty members, students, and members of the general public.


Maritime Silk Road International Cultural Forum concluded With initiatives launched to promote cooperation in the field of cultural heritage of the Maritime Silk Road

Jointly presented by the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government and the National Cultural Heritage Administration of China, organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, the China Academy of Cultural Heritage, the Guangzhou Secretariat of City Alliance for Maritime Silk Road Heritage Conservation and World Heritage Nomination, and ICOMOS China, and co-organized by the University of Macau and the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies, the Maritime Silk Road International Cultural Forum was held on 16 and 17 November. At the closing ceremony, representatives from several countries and regions, international heritage institutions and those from Chinese cities along the Maritime Silk Road jointly launched the “Macao Initiatives for the Protection of the Maritime Silk Road and its Nomination for World Heritage”, further promoting the cooperation and various partnerships in the field of the cultural heritage related to the Maritime Silk Road, as well as facilitating the nomination of the Maritime Silk Road for the UNESCO World Heritage List. The hosting of this Cultural Forum in Macao has emphasized the role of Macao as “a base for exchange and cooperation where Chinese culture is the mainstream and diverse cultures coexist”. Several experts and scholars from home and abroad presented their research results and delivered speeches, which yielded fruitful results.



Foreign exchange reserves and nominal effective exchange rate index for the pataca – October 2022

The Monetary Authority of Macao announced today that the preliminary estimate of Macao SAR’s foreign exchange reserves amounted to MOP209.6 billion (USD25.92 billion) at the end of October 2022. The reserves decreased by 0.4% from the revised value of MOP210.3 billion (USD26.01 billion) for the previous month. Macao SAR’s foreign exchange reserves at end-October 2022 represented 10 times the currency in circulation or 84.8% of pataca M2 at end-September 2022.


UM holds Innovation and Entrepreneurship Open Day

The UltiMater 2022 – UM Innovation and Entrepreneurship Open Day cum Presentation Ceremony of the Second Funding Scheme for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, was held today (17 November) at the University of Macau (UM). The event was organised by UM’s Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, with assistance from UM’s Research Services and Knowledge Transfer Office, Zhuhai UM Science & Technology Research Institute, and Guangdong Dazhihui Holding Group Co Ltd. The event showcased the research results of up to 30 start-up companies at UM and attracted members of higher education institutions in Macao as well as members of different sectors of the community.


Results of visitor expenditure survey for the 3rd quarter of 2022

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total spending of visitors (excluding gaming expenses) dropped by 39.7% year-on-year to MOP2.90 billion in the third quarter of 2022, dragged down by a 50% decline in visitor arrivals amid the pandemic. Total spending of overnight visitors (MOP2.63 billion) and same-day visitors (MOP 264 million) fell by 37.6% and 54.6% year-on-year respectively. In the first three quarters of 2022, total spending of visitors amounted to MOP13.34 billion, down by 26.5% year-on-year.


Private sector construction and real estate transactions for the 3rd quarter of 2022

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 854 building units and parking spaces were purchased and sold in the third quarter of 2022 as per Stamp Duty record, and the total value of transactions was MOP4.86 billion, down by 30.7% and 26.8% respectively quarter-to-quarter. Purchase and sale of residential units decreased by 252 quarter-to-quarter to 541 units, and the total value fell by 30.8% to MOP3.36 billion. Number of existing residential units transacted (524 units) dropped by 31.1% and the transaction value (MOP3.24 billion) went down by 30.4%. Besides, transaction volume (17 units) and value (MOP 120 million) of pre-sale residential units reduced by 46.9% and 39.1% respectively quarter-to-quarter.


Results of transport, storage & communications survey 2021

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that there were 3,319 establishments operating in the Transport, Storage & Communications Sector in 2021, a decrease of 107 year-on-year; total number of persons engaged went down by 1,454 to 20,374. Receipts and expenditure of the sector amounted to MOP19.07 billion and MOP16.89 billion respectively, up by 12.5% and 8.1% year-on-year. Gross Surplus totalled MOP2.17 billion, an upsurge of 70.2% year-on-year. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy rose by 11.4% year-on-year to MOP6.81 billion, while Gross Fixed Capital Formation fell by 18.9% to MOP645 million.
