UM’s latest breakthrough identifies high-risk liver cancer subtype and reveals AI-guided precision treatment strategy
A team led by Associate Professor Joong Sup Shim in the Faculty of Medicine (FMD) at the University of Macau (UM), in collaboration with researchers from Asan Medical Center, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), and Hanyang University College of Medicine in South Korea, Harvard Medical School in the United States, and other international partners, has made a breakthrough in liver cancer research. The team revealed that the inactivation of the tumour suppressor gene RB1 is associated with an aggressive form of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The researchers also developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based tool to rapidly identify patients with RB1 inactivation and discovered that their tumours respond particularly well to a specific combination treatment. These findings offer a new direction for precision medicine in liver cancer. The study has been published in Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy (STTT), a leading international journal in biomedical sciences.

Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) is making active endeavors to tap into international visitor markets including deepening engagement in the Spanish market. In the first eight months of 2026, Macao registered an increase of over 30% in European visitor arrivals, with a surge of nearly 20% in the number of Spanish visitors. The Office keeps striving to raise Macao’s profile and appeal in the Spanish visitor market through a diversity of promotional initiatives. The Spanish Confederation of Travel Agents (CEAV) has recently announced its commendation of Macao as the “Preferred Destination 2027”. In recognition of Macao’s unique strengths as a world centre of tourism and leisure, the designation will be a boon for Macao’s continuous pursuit of the Spanish and European markets.

CPCS’s announcement of the list of legal persons in the industrial, commercial and financial sector, the labour sector, and the professional sector for failure to submit an annual summary report
According to paragraph 2 of Article 30 of the current Voter Registration Law, the Standing Committee for the Coordination of Social Affairs is going to announce the list of legal persons recognized as belonging to the industrial, commercial and financial sector, the labour sector, or the professional sector for failure to submit an annual summary report by the statutory deadline (30 September this year), together with their identification information. The list will be posted, from tomorrow (15 October) onwards, at the office entrance of the Standing Committee (address: Travessa 1° de Maio, Edifício Advance Plaza, r/c, 32-G, Macau) and published on its website (https://www.cpcs.gov.mo).

Macao’s experience as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy showcased at World Food Forum flagship event
In cooperation with the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) Secretariat, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) participated in a Biocultural and Food Heritage Pavilion session during the 2026 World Food Forum flagship event being held in Italy. Featuring Macao as a case study in its development as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, the session presented how the Macao SAR Government, high educational institutions, cultural associations, culinary professionals and youth are working together to reinforce the “golden calling card” as a Creative City of Gastronomy, to safeguard the Macanese cuisine while promoting innovation, international exchange and sustainable development.

The First Ordinary Plenary Meeting of the Committee for the Development of Conventions and Exhibitions in 2026
The first ordinary plenary meeting of the Committee for the Development of Conventions and Exhibitions in 2026 was convened on 6 October, chaired by Ng Wai Han, Secretary for Economy and Finance and Chairman of the Committee for the Development of Conventions and Exhibitions. The Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (“IPIM”) introduced the latest developments in Macao’s MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry, and two forthcoming MICE support schemes set to bolster the competitiveness of local MICE industry. Meanwhile, the Industrial Development Bureau of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Co-operation Zone in Hengqin (hereinafter referred to as the “Co-operation Zone”) presented the information of Hengqin International Convention and Exhibition Center and associated operational plans. Committee members also exchanged views on the future development of Macao’s MICE industry.
