Preliminary figures for Gross Domestic Product for the first quarter of 2025

Starting from the reference period of the first quarter of 2025, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) releases preliminary figures for Gross Domestic Product (GDP) about 30 days after the end of the reference quarter, and publishes the revised figures later on, to provide more timely GDP data to the public. Detailed results of the revised GDP for the first quarter of 2025 will be released on 16 May 2025.

UM launches Doctor of Philosophy in Brain and Cognitive Sciences programme to nurture interdisciplinary talent
The University of Macau (UM) will launch a Doctor of Philosophy in Brain and Cognitive Sciences programme in the 2025/2026 academic year. The programme aims to nurture top-tier research talent for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, advance cutting-edge research in cognitive neuroscience, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration. The programme is now accepting applications until 31 May.

IAM optimises plan for collection of large unwanted furniture items and increases the number of collection points to over 130
To facilitate the public’s disposal of bulky garbage, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) has formulated a plan for the collection of large unwanted furniture items. Collection points for large unwanted furniture items are set up in the different districts of Macao in May, August and November each year. The mentioned plan is optimised this year and the number of collection points has been increased from 60 to 136, spreading across Macao Peninsula, Taipa and Coloane. IAM calls on the public to comply with the mentioned plan and dispose of their unwanted furniture items properly at the designated time and locations. Offenders may be prosecuted.

【Celebrate International Museum Day】 Macao Grand Prix Museum offers free admission and educational activity on 18 May
In celebration of International Museum Day, the annual global event on 18 May, the Macao Grand Prix Museum (referred to as the “Museum”), under Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO)’s management, will be open to the public for free admission on the day. Three sessions of a fun educational activity will engage participants for free at the Museum on the day. Signups are welcome online from tomorrow (1 May).

Announcement of medical service arrangements of Macao Union Medical Center for Labour Day and Buddha’s Birthday
In view of Labour Day and the Buddha’s Birthday, the specialist outpatient services (including all specialist outpatient clinics, the Imagiology Centre, blood drawing and specimen collection services) and international medical services of the Macao Union Medical Center will be closed on 1 May (Thursday) and 5 May (Monday).

MGTO launches free ferry and bus tickets for international visitors in Hong Kong again from 1 May to widen international markets
Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) partners with the Hong Kong-Macao bus and ferry operators once again to launch the special offer of free ferry and direct bus tickets from Hong Kong to Macao for international visitors (from beyond the Greater China region) who arrive in Hong Kong, starting from 1 May. The scheme aims to attract more international visitors for an extended journey to Macao, as part of the effort to expand international visitor markets.

Transport and communications statistics for the first quarter of 2025
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 252,523 as at the end of the first quarter of 2025, up by 0.7% year-on-year. In the first quarter, cross-border vehicular traffic (2,555,372 trips), passenger ferry trips (19,988 trips) and arriving and departing commercial flights at the Macau International Airport (13,621 trips) rose by 22.9%, 1% and 2.4% year-on-year respectively. As at the end of the first quarter, number of mobile phone subscribers (1,458,046) and internet subscribers (797,077) showed respective growth of 4.5% and 7.7% year-on-year.

In Line with the Positioning Strategy of Macao-Hengqin, Both Regions’ Departments Accelerate Joint Investment Promotion
To accelerate the implementation of the “Optimised Joint Investment Promotion between Macao and Hengqin” initiatives outlined in this year’s Policy Address of the Macao SAR Government, alongside the economic and financial policies aimed at promoting the brand “MICE² Macao x Hengqin”, President of the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) of Macao SAR Vincent U and Director of the Economic Development Bureau of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Co-operation Zone in Hengqin Wu Chuangwei had a working meeting in Macao today, on strategies and arrangements for the synergistic development of Macao and Hengqin, including attracting more high-quality industrial projects from both domestic and international sources to Macao-Hengqin, co-ordinating the large-scale MICE activities to be held in these two regions at the end of the year; initiating the inaugural Chinese version of the UFI professional training course set to take place in Hengqin, and more. Both regions work together to develop the Co-operation Zone and support Macao’s appropriately diversified economy.
