UM holds UAUC joint meeting; Ho Iat Seng: nurture more talent who love China and Macao
The University of Macau (UM) held the Joint Meeting of the University Assembly (UA) and University Council (UC) for the 2022/2023 academic year in its Ho Yin Conference Hall on 29 June. Ho Iat Seng, chief executive of the Macao SAR, chancellor of UM, and chair of the UA, presided over the meeting. He stressed the need to learn and implement the spirit contained in President Xi Jinping’s letter of reply to higher education institutions and science and technology workers in Macao last month, promote technological innovation and commercialisation of research results, and nurture more outstanding talent who love China and Macao.

“MICE+Tourism” Synergy IPIM Leads 20 Macao Enterprises to Build “PSC Mart – Portuguese-speaking Countries Products and Services Experience Zone” at MITE
The Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) will set up the “PSC Mart – Portuguese-speaking Countries Products and Services Experience Zone” at the 11th Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo (MITE), where 20 Macao enterprises will exhibit and market featured products from Portuguese-speaking countries and Macao. At the same venue, the “Pavilion of China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform”, “China-PSC Business Compass”, “Economic & Trade Co-operation and Human Resources Portal between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries” and other IPIM services will be concurrently promoted to highlight the role of Macao as the China-PSCs platform, aiming to facilitate the development of SMEs in Macao by leveraging the “MICE+Tourism” synergy.

External merchandise trade statistics for May 2023
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export amounted to MOP1.17 billion in May 2023, up by 2.6% year-on-year. Value of re-exports (MOP1.02 billion) rose by 3.8%, of which re-exports of Articles for casino and Beauty, cosmetic & skincare products rocketed by 3,348.2% and 56.3% respectively, while those of Diamond & diamond jewellery and Garments dropped by 56.4% and 31.7% respectively. Value of domestic exports (MOP157 million) decreased by 4.8%, of which domestic exports of Copper & articles thereof and Pharmaceutical products & organic chemicals fell by 41.6% and 41.2% respectively, while those of Garments grew by 28.3%. Meanwhile, total merchandise import went up by 4.3% year-on-year to MOP12.53 billion; imports of Gold jewellery and Food & beverages showed respective growth of 45.1% and 41.7%, whereas imports of Mobile phones and Beauty, cosmetic & skincare products reduced by 65.2% and 25.0% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP11.35 billion in May.

Selected in the top eight of the Times Higher Education Asia Awards, MPU’s innovation in both teaching and research of the arts has been recognised internationally
The Times Higher Education (THE) Awards Asia 2023, attracting over 500 entries from universities across Asia, took place at the THE Asia Universities Summit in Hong Kong on 21 June 2023. Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) was one of the eight finalists for the Award of “Excellence and Innovation in the Arts”. Its innovation in research and teaching of the arts has been recognised internationally.
