Visitor arrivals for February 2023
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that visitor arrivals totalled 1,593,743 in February 2023, representing an upsurge of 143.1% year-on-year and a rise of 14.0% month-on-month. Overnight visitors (843,402) and same-day visitors (750,341) soared by 201.8% and 99.5% year-on-year respectively. Meanwhile, the average length of stay of visitors shortened by 0.2 day year-on-year to 1.3 days; the duration for overnight visitors (2.2 days) dropped by 1.1 days, while that for same-day visitors (0.3 day) went up by 0.2 day.

Business climate survey on restaurants & similar establishments and retail trade for January 2023
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that receipts of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments increased by 45.8% year-on-year in January 2023, driven by the relaxation of border control measures and the Lunar New Year. Western Restaurants and Chinese Restaurants registered an upsurge of 75.7% and 64.4% respectively in receipts. In addition, sales of the interviewed retailers went up by 35.3% year-on-year in January. Sales of Watches, Clocks & Jewellery Retailers hiked by 65.8%, while sales of Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers and Leather Goods Retailers grew by 46.6% and 43.0% respectively; meanwhile, Motor Vehicle Retailers posted a 6.3% fall in sales.

DSI’s measure to increase application service time will end on 31 March
In order to cope with the surge in demand for application service in a short period of time, the Identification Services Bureau (DSI) has extended service hours to 9 p.m. and opens on Saturday and Sunday to receive applications for identity cards and travel documents since 7th February. Until present, over 48,000residents have lodged applications. Recently, there is a significant decline in appointments for lodging application in the extended service hours. Therefore, the relevant measure will end on 31st March. DSI calls for citizens who need to apply for documents to make appointment for the relevant service as early as possible, so as to avoid hindrance to their travelling plan.

Demographic statistics for the 4th quarter of 2022
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population at end-December 2022 decreased by 1.5% or 10,400 year-on-year to 672,800, mainly due to a fall in the number of non-resident workers living in Macao. Female population accounted for 53.2% of the total population. The proportion of elderly population (aged 65 and above) grew by 1.1 percentage points year-on-year to 13.3%, whereas that of adult population (aged 15-64) dropped by 0.7 percentage points to 72.6%. The ageing ratio climbed by 10.7 percentage points to 94.4%, indicating that the number of elderly got closer to the number of youth.

UM, Caritas Macau co-organise experience sharing session on combating COVID-19
The Centre for Macau Studies (CMS) of the University of Macau (UM) and Caritas Macau today (16 March) co-organised an experience sharing session titled ‘At the Front Line of the Community against the Epidemic: Caritas Macau’s Experience in Coping with COVID-19’. During the event, members of Caritas Macau, including representatives of five service units, namely Caritas-Life Hope Hotline of Macau, Complexo de Serviços de Apoio Ao Cidadão Sénior Retribuição, Brilho da Vida Elderly Centre, Casa Corsel, and WelAnser Centre, discussed the organisation’s epidemic prevention strategy, psychological support service, temporary accommodation and assistance to people stranded in Macao, as well as services for the elderly and people with disabilities in residential care homes.
