As the pandemic situation in Macao moves towards stability, in parallel with the latest adjustment to the pandemic control and prevention measures implemented at the ports of entry between Zhuhai and Macao, Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) dedicates strong efforts to promote the destination, including leveraging various social media such as WeChat, Weibo, Xiaohongshu and Douyin, and through the endeavors of Macao’s KOLs on their platforms, to spotlight Macao as a safe and quality destination among Mainland residents and welcome visitors to experience the city. Individuals intending to leave Macao via either a civil aviation flight or via a ferry service are now required to present a nucleic acid test certificate issued within 48 hours proving they are ‘negative’ for COVID-19 infection.

As the situation of the pandemic in Macao has gradually stabilised, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) will reopen the facilities under its management in phases. Outdoor facilities such as children’s play facilities inside gardens, parks and leisure areas, sports and fitness facilities, pavilions, barbecue areas and free sports grounds will be reopened from October 19. Taipa Flea Market, Gathering at Dusk in Senado Square and bicycle rental service at cycle tracks will also be resumed. IAM will also continue to strengthen cleaning of the venues and facilities. The public are advised to comply when they have to undergo temperature checks and display their valid “Macao Health Code” upon entry to some venues or use of facilities. However, activity centres, indoor facilities and venues of IAM remain closed.

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the business performance of both restaurants & similar establishments and retail trade in August 2021 was affected as local confirmed cases of coronavirus infection were reported at the beginning of the month. There were 33% of the interviewed restaurants & similar establishments reporting a year-on-year rise in receipts in August, a drop of 31 percentage points from July; the corresponding proportions of Western Restaurants (19%), Chinese Restaurants (39%) and Japanese & Korean Restaurants (12%) declined by 42 percentage points, 36 percentage points and 35 percentage points respectively. Meanwhile, the proportion of interviewed retailers recording a year-on-year sales rise in August (66%) went down by 16 percentage points over the preceding month; the corresponding proportions of Cosmetics & Sanitary Articles Retailers (36%) and Department Stores (50%) fell by 55 percentage points and 25 percentage points from July respectively, while the shares of Motor Vehicle Retailers (46%) and Supermarkets (56%) grew by 16 percentage points and 11 percentage points. For the Business Performance Index (BPI) that reflects the trend of year-on-year changes in business receipts, the value for restaurants & similar establishments (41.9) was lower than 50 in August, indicating that the business performance of the industry was less satisfactory compared to the same month last year. On the other hand, the BPI for retail trade (71.0) was higher than 50, implying that the business of the industry fared better than in August last year.

In response to a bogus news item circulating in the social media which reports that the information release platform of the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre indicated that, “As one suspected positive sample has been detected in the nucleic acid tests at night on 18 October… the Zhuhai-Macao cross-boundary arrangements from 12 pm today will be deferred… ”, the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre (hereinafter referred to as “the Centre”) emphasizes that, no suspected positive sample has been detected since yesterday (18 October), and the Zhuhai-Macao cross-boundary arrangement will be effective from 12 pm today as scheduled.

In order to assist cross-border students in Macao to return to Zhuhai, DSEDJ has coordinated and communicated with the relevant government departments of Macao and Zhuhai during the past few days. Some cross-border students and their parents decided to continue to stay in Macao. About 400 eligible cross-border students and the accompanying persons decided to return to Zhuhai. DSEDJ coordinated with the relevant departments of Zhuhai and Macao, worked with schools to jointly arrange for them to return to Zhuhai. They took vehicles from the hostels and schools to Zhuhai-Macao Port on 11 and 12 October. They entered the port in an orderly manner. Special lanes were opened for them and they went through customs smoothly. At present, they have taken nucleic acid testing and gone back to their home for home quarantine.
